Mid-week entertainment report

It's Wednesday so the biggest three stories from THUS far this week, in MY humble opinion.....

No Golden Globes this year because of the writers' strike and the Oscars are in danger as well. So let me get this straight. Because a bunch of Television writers are striking, we don't get the Golden Globes? Is it because the host wouldn't have been able to spew out the monologue (which btw, usually isn't that funny anyways?) Is it because picketers might have shown up and ruined the red carpet? That's an easy fix. Just don't have a red carpet ceremony, or leave it to TV Guide channel, which no one with Digital cable watches anyways. I have an idea. Have the Golden Globes and when it is time to honor the best written comedy on TV...say NO ONE WINS SINCE THEY ARE ON STRIKE! That would stick it to them. HA!
But seriously, the strike might cause the Oscars to do what the Golden Globes are doing:announce the winners at a press conference? Ummm last time I checked, the Oscars honored MOVIES! And the reason the television writers are TV writers and not MOVIE writers is because they aren't good enough to be movie writers. Why should you make US suffer by missing the Oscars (which again, HONORS MOVIES and not TV) and the only good host in quite a while (Jon Stewart)? You couldn't have done this last year when Ellen was hosting? Shouldn't the TV writers' strike affect the Emmy's? You know TV's awards? I'm just saying........

Posh Spice was named the "worst dressed" celeb for 2007 by some tool named Mr. Blackwell. Really? And Amy Whinehouse was #2 on your list? Some of his best celebs were Madonna, Elizabeth Taylor and the Queen of England. Madonna? She once wore construction cones for a bra. But what do you have against Posh Spice? Is it because she is hot, and you Mr. Blackwell are probably an ugly person. You have been doing this list for 48 years. So you are clearly an old foggy. It might time to quit with the list. Can we get someone a little more hip and with the times to do this list? If you need me to volunteer, I can do that. (also, I didn't realize Lizzie Taylor was still alive, but apparently she is, and she is very well dressed.)

Finally Jerry Seinfeld and his wife are being sued by Missy Chase Lapise for "plagiarizing her cookbook." Really? Mrs. Seinfeld wrote the book, so clearly the only reason Jerry's name is in the lawsuit is for attention. As for Mrs. Seinfeld being sued because the ideas are similar....give me a break. I wonder if the french chef that created chicken cordon bleu sued Rachel Ray for having that dish on 30 minute meals. I wonder if Julius sued Giada DeLaurentis for stealing his Caesar Salad? You can't say some one plagiarized you just because they TOO make a dish of chicken with rice and cream of mushroom soup. If Seinfeld came out with a book that gives advice on how to feed your children healthy food without them knowing it, good for her. You know what would make YOUR book sell more Missy Chase Lapise? If it works better. If the kids like your recipes better than Mrs. Seinfeld's. get over it. I am sure Paula Dean doesn't mind that Ina Garden ALSO makes a roasted chicken. It isn't like she invented the concept. Get a grip.

So long Coach Gibbs

So Coach Joe Gibbs is retiring again from the Washington Redskins. He is stepping down with one year left on his contract and a 171-101 career record including 17-7 in the playoffs, though only 31-36 over the last 4 years. He is also walking away from 5.5M this season. Gibbs is a guy that has the third highest winning percentage among coaches with more than 125 wins. The guy won 3 Super Bowls with 3 different QBs at the helm. He already made the Hall of Fame in 1996 after his first stint as HC, but maybe he should be re-inducted for this season. This was his best job of coaching throughout his career.

His team was 5-6, having just lost to Tampa Bay and the playoffs seemed about one billion miles away. Then the next day, November 27, starting safety Sean Taylor was shot and killed by a couple of punk kids in his own house. The following Sunday the team lost on a last second field goal to Buffalo in large part thanks to a 15-yard penalty on Gibbs for calling two straight time outs, thus turning a 52 yarder into a 37 yarder. The team was 5-7. Then in the next game, though the Redskins won, it was a Pyrrhic victory as starting QB Jason Campbell was lost with an injury.

Gibbs just rallied the team behind 36 year old back-up Todd Collins and the record went from 5-7 to 9-7 and a playoff spot was clinched with a win over rival Dallas on the season's final day.

Then in the playoffs, his team rallied from a 13 point deficit to take the lead with a chance for more, but a missed field goal and a costly pick ended the Redskins' season.

Gibbs made this come together though following the loss of the team's best player. He took them from the edge of the world to the edge of the second round of the playoffs. This team was clearly not his best, but he coached them up.

Then he walked away after the emotional drain left him with nothing in the tank. He could have stuck around next year, collected money (5.5M) and maybe taken the team to the playoffs again, maybe not, but he pulled the ANTI-Spurrier and did what was best for the Redskins. Sure the whispers were there that maybe the game has passed him by, but I don't buy it. Football is about players. The players looked to him after they lost their best player and leader on the field. He took them farther than any thought they could go.

And now Gibbs will step aside and let Gregg Williams take over. Will the Redskins be better for it? Who knows, but the team was better this year with Joe Gibbs at the helm. It needed Gibbs. And he in fact DID help save the Redskins, which is what he promised Dan Snyder. Sometimes there is more to saving a team then just titles.

Marissa was REALLY putting herself out there...

For some reason I started thinking about this topic this morning, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. And not for the reason you might think....(get your mind out of the gutter!) The OC:Season 2 when Marissa slid her hand into Alex's at that crappy concert. What a leap she was taking there, and not just a personal leap into lezbinenism, but a leap at thinking Alex would be into her. Let's consider...

The first night we see Marissa, she drinks so much she passes out and her friends just DROP her on her front porch. Then a random guy whom she "bummed" a ciggy from picks her up and carries her to his house.
She gives it up to a guy just because she was angry at her quasi-boyfriend and because the guy got shot.
She went on to OD on painkillers in TJ
She then escaped the hospital
She shoplifted then had to go to therapy.
She left her boyfriend for a psycho.
She ran away from her cushy house in Newport to "start over" in Chino
She started drinking after her boyfriend left to go take care of possibly his baby and she didn't stop until......
She started sexing with the Mexican (illegal?) gardener.
She is the offspring of..... a white-collar criminal who went broke, then caused his restaurant to get sold for WAY under value who was described by his daughter as a "thief" and a gold-digging, Mrs. Robinson wannabe who was described by her daughter as a "slut."

Between the heavy drinking, just having been dumped by DJ and the crazy parents situation (thief dad, gold-digging mom, step-dad old enough to be her granddad), she wasn't exactly a catch.

But I guess her thinking was, "oh Alex went for Seth, of course she'll go for me."

Well I have news for you Marissa, just because you were hot, that doesn't mean you were as hot as Emmanuelle Chriqui. She (Jodie) was pretty hot. And she was a true lezbinen, not just a "oh I want to piss my mom off lezbinen" like you were. Just so we know.

I just think you really went out onto a limb in assuming Alex would want you as a new girlfriend, but I guess in Newport, Lezbinens don't have much to choose from, so Alex was thrilled to find this new free agent. Oh well.

But I think we ALL knew if wouldn't work out. But it was fun watching you guys kiss on the Valentine's Episode. Great stuff.

Eli's Comin'

Attention women of Dallas: Eli’s coming! Hide your hearts immediately. OK, so that might be a little extreme, but lookout, after “upsetting” Tampa Bay in the first round of the playoffs, the New York Giants are venturing out to Dallas to meet up with the Cowboys for the third time this season. On New York’s last trip out to Texas Stadium, the Cowboys handed them a loss to open the season. Funny thing though, that was the last road loss for the Giants for the entire year. Yep, Eli Manning and the Giants have won eight straight road games. And the biggest reason the Giants will win this weekend: Eli Manning.

Eli Manning in just the last two games has finally left the Ozzie Canseco-Billy Ripken-Harvey Grant-Jonas Hayes-Gerald Wilkins-Jeremy Giambi fraternity of semi-talented professionals living in the shadow of their more talented brothers. Eli is finally trading on his own name now. In the last two games Eli has a 6:1 TD:INT ratio. True against the Patriots, he threw a crushing interception at the end of the game to ice it for New England, but did HE give up the Touchdown bomb to Randy Moss? Was Eli the one that let Wes Welker catch 11 balls over the course of the game? After struggling to get the offense going Sunday, Eli finally put the game away in the second half when Tampa seemed to be rallying. He looked off the defense and hit Amani Toomer for the clinching points. The team really seemed to believe in him there at the end and they were very congratulatory on the sidelines. That didn’t always happen in years past.

With no Tiki Barber and no Jeremy Shockey, this New York Giants team needed its QB to step up and now Eli has Brandon Jacobs, Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer believing. They said as much yesterday before and after the game.

Eli is ready to continue this run of eight straight road wins. Dallas is a little beat up to boot. TO is still suffering a lingering leg injury. Terry Glenn really hasn’t played meaningful snaps all year. Last time we saw Tony Romo, he was chasing down ANOTHER interception against Washington. Half of the Dallas coaching staff is readying their resumes for when Bill Parcells calls. And should we not forget that Wade Phillips is the head coach of Dallas? I know the guy is the winningest coach, percentage-wise in Atlanta Falcons’ history, but come on. Wade Phillips. Lastly, it is hard for a team to beat another squad three times in one season. After a while the law of averages is going to catch up and flip the switch. And Eli Manning can’t wait. His switch has already been flipped.

American Gladiators IS BACK! Hecksyeah

Last night, maybe the 19th greatest thing EVER to happen to television happened: American Gladiators RETURNED to TV. I was so excited the weeks leading up to last night (and tonight) that I almost couldn't stand myself. My bride-to-be said she was going out of town for business for the week, but I know she REALLY left because I was going crazy over the two-day return of American Gladiators. I loved this show back in the 1990s. Thunder, Crush, the deaf chick, Larry Czonka, YOU COULDN'T LOSE with these guys. The Joust, Assault (not a Colt Brennan reference), the Eliminator. What a great show.
Well after watching the two hour premire last night, I have to say it excells in some places the other show didn't, yet in some spots tweaking needs to take place. Here are my thoughts as I kept a stack of post-its beside me for note-taking.

First thing is....what is with the water? Is that going to be the new "thing" with this series? Everything is over water. I guess that is cooler than everything being over padding, so if you fall off the joust or the bridge-con-demolition balls, you get humiliated and have to do the post-event interview soaking wet. Maybe if it was over lava. Hmmm something for the show to consider.

I heard one of the male gladiators was formerly in gay porn. Watching the promos for the series I thought it HAD to be "Wolf." Wolf is the guy that looks like Ben Stiller's character from Dodgeball and he howls after everything he does. I thought it HAD to be him....but then I saw "Titan." Now I am not sure. This Titan character has that look of gay porn, like maybe he was the "receiver" in a few of the scenes. Not that I would know what gay porn stars look like.....[move on quickly!]

The women's gladiator jouster "Crush," was HOT. She is seriously hot. Like really hot. That was the problem with the old gladiator women, they looked JUST like the men, but with longer, more 80s hair. Not very attractive. Apparently NBC took the memo from FNL (sex up ALL of the characters) and applied it to American Gladiators. Which I don't have a problem with. They probably won't be as strong as the old gladiators, but they are CERTAINLY HOTTER. Sex sells.

Did the woman who just hurt herself on the FIRST HIT, REALLY just call the American Gladiators the "best athletes in the world?" really? my problems here are two-fold. 1 you hurt yourself on the first hit. Was there not a tryout or something where maybe you could have gotten hit and shown you can't get tackled? You also talked about coming back next year to compete for your kids...if you can't take a hit NOW, what makes you think that after another year of motherhood and getting older you could magically take a hit again? 2 did you really just call these guys the "best athletes in the world?" really? If they were soooooo great, would the guys still be playing football like they were before they weren't good enough for the NFL and had to switch to being a "gladiator?" just asking....

Wolf howls a lot. I mean a LOT.

So Chad the skateboarder is going against AA the NYC Fireman. Chad really sucks, but he is talking SO much smack. I think the producers WANT them to talk a bunch of junk this year. I dunno. But Chad is OVER the top. Add him to the list of skateboarders I hate. Yep, right behind Ryan (the 17 year old millionaire with "real problems" on MTV) and Rob (of MTV's Rob and Big "fame") Yep. List of three. BUT HE IS THERE! And PS, shouldn't a firefighter clearly beat a skateboarder? I mean REAL occupation v a guy that never realized that skateboarding was for 13 year olds that once they got their driver's license REALLY should have given it up. Sorry Seth Cohen.

Venom, another woman gladiator is HOT. But she weighs more than me. It is probably all muscle though. That is kinda hot too. Anyways, she was defending the pyramid. I don't know. All of the tumbling was strangly hot. Venus (the Asian contestant) and Venom tumbling...hot.

Toa did the Ha'a dance before he defended the pyramid against the firefigher. He had ABOUT the same success Hawaii did when they did the dance before they played Georgia in the Sugar bowl. the firefighter get 5 points and after deeking the guy out of his jock he was .004 seconds away from getting the full 10 points. Word of advice to EVERYONE: don't do the Ha'a to fire yourself up. IT DOESN'T WORK, unless you are playing in the WAC

I am NOT a fan of this life coach woman contestant. She just bothers me. She is too peppy, plus the front of her outfit is just not flattering. I don't wanna call it fupa, i don't wanna call it camel-toe, but it is something.....

Time for the eliminator! YES! Although, where are the gladiators at the end, waiting for you to pick the wrong/right door? Come on!

THE LIFE COACH JUST QUIT AS SHE HAD A HUGE LEAD! She couldn't make it up the diagonal treadmill. REALLY? DID she just give up? How did that happen? Isn't she a life coach? Should she have hired herself to make it up there? Wait, shouldn't she have to get a new line of work? I wouldn't want her as my life coach-she gave up. Was she REALLY that tired? Maybe both of the contestants weren't in that great of shape. SHE GAVE UP. How does that happen?

On to the men. They seemed to have a little easier time with the course, but the NYCFF was a TERRIBLE swimmer. I hope he never has to swim to put out a fire. That didn't make sense. I am still steamed about no gladiators at the finish line.

They just ran the lineup of gladiators. MAN so of the women are hot. Sex sells on NBC!
HOUR 2
So Mully the self-described "crazy Asian" is up against Jeff a guy who missed a tryout back in 1994, so he is back. Whatever. They go in the gauntlet and MAN does Titan work that big rod well. (gay porn reference there!)

Wolf calls out for his "Wolf Pack" Really?

But Jeff is REALLY a fighter in the gauntlet. I life the feistyness. So does Titan apparently.

Shanay Norvell (no relation for Deborah) is up next against Bonnie Blanco the 25-year old ex-marine mother of 2. I am 26, not married with no kids. She is one year younger, con dos ninas and retired. wow.

So the Men joust now. And Gladiator Mayhem DQs himself twice. WHAT? he is the gladiator expert? huh? He just DQed himself twice. HE KNEW what NOT to do, and he did it anyway. Mayhem! Come on bro!

So Shanay said the gladiators were "all shooken up" So the gladiators are some of the "best athletes in the world" and the contestants are "really smart" rrrright

In "Hang Tough" (New Kids on the Block) Fury goes against the women. She is hot. She reminds me of Eliza Douchekoo, but with a big ponytail on top of her head. Bonnie drops Fury off the rings, and gets 5 points. Then Shanay goes and she easily gets her 10 points. Whomever goes second clearly has the advantage. They get a weakened gladiator, plus they see what worked and didn't. They should have fresh gladiator and contestant in an isolation booth.

Finally the eliminator rolls around. Jeff lost to Mully and he started crying. Maybe he was crying because he ranked being on American Gladiators as the 3rd greatest thing in his life behind having a child and getting married. REALLY, That's number 3? Not graduating from high school or college? Not getting a great job? American Gladiators?

Then Bonnie went and busted her nose on the swimming portion of the Eliminator. Apparently she couldn't judge 20 meters underwater and came up after 2 meters and busted her nose on a pipe. HA! And I was really rooting for her too.

Oh well. Can't wait for tonight and to see my girl Crush. GLADIATORS ARE BACK BABY!

Bowl thoughts

Let me start by saying that this is NOT another "we need a playoff" blog. Nope not going to happen. Maybe in 6 years when Fox's BCS contract is up, but I doubt it will happen then. So let's just deal with a system that ENSURES WE GET A #1 v #2 Bowl Championship game.

But some thoughts thus far.......
The Texas A&M "get JoePa a coffin" joke was great. Why the school thought it needed to apologize for what a booster said at a pep rally, I have NO idea. But come on, that was funny. The guy is in TERRIBLE shape. He is 81 and he looks 181. I thought it was funny. People take things too seriously.

Any bowl where you end up PAYING more to play in it that you make, THEN YOU GO ON TO LOSE, maybe you should have just said, "That's ok, we won't go bowling this year." Georgia Tech, I'm talking to YOU here. You LOST money going to Boise, Idaho for a crappy New Year's Eve TO LOSE. You lost to Fresno State. You did your PROGRAM NO FAVORS THERE. I think maybe the team would have been better off letting Paul Johnson take over and get practice going. Oh, the bowl is a reward for the seniors? That is their reward? New Year's Eve in Idaho? Really? I think they would have rather been in Buckhead of VaHi for the ball dropping. Just saying....

The Music City Bowl was won by UK, but they certainly TRIED to give that one away at the end. After blowing a huge lead with little time left, they intercepted a ball which SHOULD have won the game, but the UK guy tried to make Sportscenter by running it back and FSU stripped the ball and got a few more cracks at it. UK eventually won, but if the guy just falls to the ground (see: Tennessee player) then UK then take three knees and end the game. Stupid. I ALMOST started rooting for FSU to win that game JUST to teach that guy a lesson.

Arkansas was REALLY bad. The Cotton Bowl showed you how good a coach Houston Nutt was, to have his team as competitive as it was. Arkansas was terrible in that game against a Mizzou team that felt jobbed. If Run DMC had gotten off at all early, then maybe Mizzou packs it in, angry at the system. But they don't and Mizzou makes a statement. Oh well.

Auburn going against Clemson, Tommy Bowden, fresh off an extension and off the hot seat immediately loses. Hmmmmmm Never saw THAT ONE COMING.

USC dismantles Illinois, but the Illini had a chance in the third before the men of Troy shut the door. Final was 49-17 or something. Yeah, good call traditionalists, saying Illinois v USC was the match-up you wanted. Good call

OU v West Va, I though it would be a blowout, but the other way. WOW, OU really stunk it up. Maybe they WON'T be top 3 preseason next year. HA. West VA WILL be top 5 though. Well, except for their coach who went 8-21 at VMI. VMI! And he gets handed the keys to a potential national champion? Paging Steve Fisher!

KU v VaTech. Wow. VaTech lost to a team that played BeamerBall. Scoring on INTs and blocked FGs....Rock Chalk JayHawk giving the castrated Turkeys a taste of their own medicine. NICE. One nice thing, i barely heard ANYTHING about VaTech being America's team during the Fox broadcast, maybe because I was watching in mute. I don't know. I also liked how in addition to gatorade, Mangino ordered the training staff to keep au jus in little cups. He apparently WASN'T holding a playsheet, but in fact a food menu from one of the upstairs club level suites. But his refusal to let the players dump gatorade on him was crazy. "Act like you've been there before?" this is Kansas. it has been HOW LONG since you were in the Orange Bowl? the 1960s? how long since a January Bowl? Sorry man-gina, they HAVEN'T been there before.

Finally, UGA v Hawaii. For all of the people who said, "the bowl just didn't turn out the way they were expecting," maybe that is because a SANE person would realize that UGA is just a TAD faster than anyone Hawaii has seen all year. I knew going in that if UGA could contain Tim Tebow, then Colt Brennan wouldn't be a problem. Georgia was just plain better than Hawaii. I loved how they just dominated the game on offense, they way the experts thought they would, but I also loved how the D dominated the ha'a warrior o-line. Speed kills baby! Colt, you aren't very good. and finally someone exposed him. Good for UGA and we are looking at a top 5 preseason ranking. With this win + Florida's loss to michigan, that TO ME means UGA will be maybe #3 with Florida @ #4. Just they way I see it.

Finally apparently after the game Colt Brennan was so confused by the pounding he took(8 sacks plus 2 fumbles and 3 INTs), he sexually assaulted a GUY, instead of the girls he is used to. BTW, Fox's pregame segment on his sexual predator history, if I was Colt, I MAY have turned down the interview. That isn't something he should be celebrating, how he has changed. I would want that buried, never to be brought up again. But that's just me....the NON-Sexual predator.

they were dressed as flappers, WHY?

Let me start by saying that I missed the first 8 minutes of this week's Newport Harbor: Home for the holidays, but I caught the rest of the show. So thus, my thoughts.

I am not certain why the crew was dressed as Roaring 1920s party-goers, but maybe that was discussed in the first 8 minutes. So I will start with that "GREAT" conversation between Chrissy and Clay where the talking took up 8 seconds of their 20 second exchange. That was PAINFUL.
"Well what do you think?"
Blank Stare
"I mean....."
Blank Stare
"well, I mean."
blank stare
"whatever, I mean, you know."
"That's it I guess."
blank stare and walk off

OUCH.
So then Grant tells Clay he should take Chrissy back. Maybe Grant being the GREAT friend he is realizes that Clay will never get another girl with his weak grasp of the english language. Good for Grant. Looking out for his buddy.

Then Chrissy decides she has to "win" Clay back and make him re-fall for her. So she throws a bunch of crap on his boat. That is supposed to "win him back?" Putting a bunch of lights on his boat?
Well it works because he takes her back. Actually I think it was her low-cut shirt that got him back. I mean COME ON, she gained all of her freshman 15 IN HER CHEST.

And she has decided to transfer from UCSB (if she actually went there instead of SBCity College, which is what some of you guys think) to USC. I think MTV MAY have had something to do with that instead of her "wanting to be closer to Clay. I thought she LOVED her sor-whore sisters so much, why else would she want to leave? I think MTV may be trying a Hills-like spinoff with her. Just me saying

Other storylines I had a problem with......Chase. I don't like this guy. MTV needs to write him OUT of the show. He is an UNLIKEABLE character. I don't feel bad for him either since he "got his heart broken" after what he did to Taylor in the original episodes. Sorry, I just don't like the guy. He WASN'T able to pull off the OC's Luke transformation. Just wasn't. Sorry producers.

Also, Allie's Marissa-like "put off college for a while" decision. She is going to "shock" her parents who thought, according to her "they would be supporting her like, forever." Um sorry to break it to you Allie, but without a college education, unless you are working for your DAD or your job is "lottery-winner" you won't make enough money to enjoy the lifestyle you currently enjoy. I am thinking your DAD will still be footing the bill for your: house, car, insurance, food, etc. Your money might be good enough to buy you ONE shirt from the shops you go to. Just make sure you keep his credit card Allie. I don't think one of her paychecks could cover the cost of one of Samantha's lunch stops.

Anyways, I can't wait for Newport Harbor to come back for season 2. should be a blast.
