If you don't get The Sporting News magazine (I think only 18 of us do. It was a gift and it makes GREAT bathroom reading. Love the daily email though...) then you might have missed last week's "ALL-STAR ROUNDTABLE" where four "all-stars" (Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson, Freddy Sanchez and Carlos Pena) were asked a series of questions, one of which being "If you could make one change to the game, what would it be?"
I'm not making up that Big Tex would shorten spring training by two weeks. HA!
But that's not the reason for the blog. Nope. The "All-star" that is Carlos Pena (snarf. Carlos Pena being called an all-star. He-he) replied that he would "make that defensive shift illegal. That's the first thing I'd do. They cannot leave their position. That'd be my first rule. I think that's absolutely evil."
DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP sigh.
Los my man, clearly teams do this shift to you and perhaps it has prevented you from a "Hall of Fame" roundtable....but I doubt it. Have you ever thought of poking it the other way? Ever thought of laying down a bunt up the third base line for a FLIPPIN' DOUBLE? Have you ever thought of making an adjustment to the opposition's adjustment? If odds are you are going to ground out into the shift anyways, why not groundout or strikeout trying to go the other way? Even if it is unsuccessful, then the other team has to take into consideration your potential for going the other way. That would open up your pull-side and you would get more hits.
Yes I know people shift for Ryan Howard. He hits a lot of home runs though and you cannot shift for that. People shift for David Ortiz (though recently the shift has been IN 9 paces) and people are for SOME REASON shifting for Brian McCann, which is stoopid because BMac can and WILL go opposite field.
But you look at the good hitters...Albert Pujols, Manny Ramirez, Chipper Jones, Joe Mauer. The other teams don't, ney CAN'T shift on them because they will find the open patch of real estate. They are willing to hit it through the open infield. If the first baseman is holding the runner and the second baseman is at double play depth, Chipper can and will shoot it through the open side. Manny Ramirez will find the hole between short and third. Pujols can place it on the line if the third baseman is off the bag or hit it where the third should be if he's cheating on the line.
The reason the teams do the shift Carlos is to take advantage of a lazy player or to dominate a player that cannot do anything but hit it there. You made the Major leagues Carlos and you were an all-star. You SHOULD be able to make adjustments. If you are just unwilling, then you've pulled a MV7 in that you had talent, you just failed to capitalize on it. Los, I'd like to think that as an all-star you'd work harder instead of being so lazy that you'd rather have the rules changed so "only 10 steps [would be] allowed." Come on Bro. hit the cages and work with the batting coach. Learn to go the other way and your pull-side will suddenly open up some.

Top Defensive senior GaHS prospects from Big B and SBF
Big B, Brian Jones of Score Atlanta Fame as well as 790 the Zone, has put together his list of the top defensive senior players that folks can see in Georgia this football season. Sportsbyfletch will also give its Top Ten list after we hear Brian's list. With no further ado........... Big B's List!
10. Jonathan Mincy (SW DeKalb) – 5-10. 164. One of the top corners in the region. Great make up speed and great awareness. Committed to Auburn.
9. Brandon Burrows (Walton) - 6-3. 235. Burrows has great speed and is considered on of the best pass rushers in the country with 10 sacks last year. He will not play his senior year due to injury but has recently committed to Georgia.
8. Isaiah Johnson (Sandy Creek) – 6-2. 180. Johnson is another athletic safety that is good in run support, but is better in pass coverage. Also has great running ability so he can take one to the house when given the chance. He has committed to the Jackets.
7. Michael Taylor (Westlake) – 6-0. 200. Taylor plays with a lot of intensity and one the hardest hitters in the southeast. Committed to Tennessee recently.
6. Ryan Ayers (South Paulding) – 5-10. 178. He’s athletic, fast and has great anticipation. Can just flat out make plays. Committed to GA Tech.
5. Neiron Ball (Jackson) – 6-4. 210. Lined up mostly at DE last year but because of his quickness and size, he will be a great OLB in college and scouts are taking notice. Florida is his school of choice.
4. Jalen Fields (Dalton) – 6-5. 250. There are very few players that can get to the quarterback better than fields. Because of his size, he can overpower offensive lineman which makes it easier to get to the quarterback. Fields has committed to Georgia.
3. T.J. Stripling (SW DeKalb) – 6-6. 210. Stripling uses his size to fight off blockers and has great lateral range to cause havoc in the backfield as he tallied 15 sacks last season. Has committed to Georgia.
2. Garrison Smith (Douglass) – 6-3. 255. Smith has all the tools to be a great college-level defensive tackle. He is quick off the ball and does a great job of staying at home on the backside. In 2008 he had 14 sacks as he played both end and tackle. Has committed to UGA.

TJ's ceiling is so high that Spike TV could broadcast Shawn Bradley and Robb Dryden chicken-fighting with Mark Eaton and Chris Mihm and there would STILL be room for 3 all-american seasons. This kid could be a great one, but right now it is all potential. ANd like the late great Dicky Fox used to say, "It's like popcorn in the pot, some pops...."
3. Neiron Ball. LB/DE. Jackson. The Future Gator, IF he puts on some muscle, could be lights out. He does need to add weight, but if he can, this kid will be impressive. Stupid Florida...

A look at the last week in the Atlanta Sports Media
I've been handed a new column with Score Atlanta where every week I'll take a look at all of the happenings in the Atlanta sports media. This is my first column.
In today’s sports world it seems that as long as a competition is going on, television, radio or a print media is covering it. And who is going to keep tabs on all of that coverage? Score Atlanta, that’s who. Every week we’ll break down what the various forms of media are doing in Atlanta and across the country. With no further ado…
The Hawks will be on national television seven times this upcoming season. Getting to the second round certainly has its perks. Not only are you on the national stage with a chance to win a title, but you get to be on ESPN and TNT the following year so everyone can track whether or not you’ll make it back. ESPN has selected six Atlanta games, four of which will be played at Philips Arena. The first national broadcast will be live from Boston on November 13, but Hawks fans can pack Philips on Thanksgiving night as well as New Year’s Night. Considering the Hawks used to never even sniff ESPN or TNT, this is a big deal. People love their Joe Johnson and Josh Smith.
The Atlanta Braves will be moving next season. No, not to a new stadium but to a new radio station. Braves games will be heard on AM 680 The Fan as well as 100.5 FM starting in 2010. The team and the station have signed a five year deal and will move to The Fan, who also owns the broadcast rights to the NHL’s Thrashers. The Fan works with two other smaller AM stations so NHL coverage will likely get pushed to The Fan2 or The Fan3 when schedules conflict. The games are currently aired on Project 96.1 FM and AM 640. This move makes sense for the Braves because with Leo Mazzone now on the station’s morning show “The Rude Awakening,” and with Buck Belue on in the afternoon, the team will get plenty of coverage, though you have to wonder if the coverage will be slanted to the positive because of the affiliation. John Kincade gives hard-hitting commentary on the Braves and it would be a shame to have him have to curb his opinions because of a fear of backlash like he sometimes does with the Atlanta Thrashers.
The Fan is also adding Florida Gator football. For the last three seasons, the Fan has been the home of Auburn football, but with Atlanta being the home to so many Florida alumni, and with the Gators seeking its second straight title and third in four years, the Fan decided to strike while it is hot. With Auburn going through a transition year and as long as Tim Tebow is doing the Gator chomp, this change will seemingly bring listeners out of the woodwork. The question is though will the station give the Gator-faithful the Urban Meyer call-in show? Maybe I missed it but I don’t remember hearing from Tommy Tuberville all that much when he was roaming the sidelines for the Tigers. WSB 750 AM will still carry the University of Georgia games with extended coverage and Sports Radio 790 The Zone is still the flagship station of Georgia Tech.
Speaking of 790 The Zone, Football still lives on the station and Friday Nights will once again feature high school football. Trey McDaniel returns to call play-by-play and John Michaels will give color commentary on all of the action. McDaniel calls a solid game and Michaels originally got his feet wet working with the Georgia Force. The two called games together last season and this year the pair should be able to flow off of each other. Those fans looking for the Saturday morning recap though might be disappointed. High School High Five will not return for a third season. Those looking for High School football news will need to tune in to 790 Sunday from 2-4 for The Official Visit, presented by Score Atlanta. Starting the week after Labor Day, the Official Visit moves to Mondays.
Finally WSB’s Chuck Dowdle will retire at the end of the year. Dowdle has been with Atlanta’s WSB for 24 years. He won’t be leaving the Atlanta sports scene however. Dowdle will still do the weekly Mark Richt coach’s show as well as handle post-game interviews for the Georgia Bulldog Radio network. It seems a shame to lose a staple of the local television scene, especially when you consider how much of a professional he was on the sports report. Dowdle never seemed to fall victim to the ESPN poseur-trap that so many sports anchors did when SportsCenter hit its peak earlier this decade. You never seemed to get a Craig Kilborn/Dan Patrick impersonation with Dowdle; you just got Chuck, and that was perfect for Atlanta.

The news JUST came down (well maybe yesterday), but American Idol will be sans Paula next season as a contract extension was never worked out and Paula felt that $2-4M was not enough when Seacrest was getting closer to $10M per season. So now the judges are back to three: Randy, Kara and Simon. Let's be honest, Paula had become a joke especially since she was overly medicating (for what, I'm not sure) and now we won't have to hear her sugarcoat terrible performances. Also, who will stand up randomly during the Idol's songs? Will the producers make Kara start drinking before the show starts? They already made her wear a bikini.... Bottom line: as long as Simon is on the show, it doesn't matter who is sitting to his right. He is the show in terms of judges. Paula, I hope you get better (I assume that's why you are taking medicine. There's something wrong with you) and we'll see you on America's Got Talent (since I'm sure NBC will fall over itself to get her on AGT to give that show a shred of credibility)!
More to Love was new last night and Wifey asked me why they gave the girls Fatboy Slim was keeping a Ring. "Is it an onion ring?" Wifey asked. (No she didn't. That is too mean for Wifey. That was my joke.) Honestly, Wifey asked me "How do they know what size for the ring?" to which I responded, "Fat." I'm not sure "Fat" is a ring size, but the rings seemed to go on all of their chubby fingers with no complaints. And honestly, some of those girls aren't that big and you can tell that even FBSlim is going for the girls that aren't as big. Just putting that out there. He doesn't want a heifer. He's a dude. He might want a little cushion, but he certainly wasn't picking the 240 girls as much as he made sure to pick all of the girls under two bills. And he sent the 37 yo to the curb. I think she was thinking this was the Fat Cougar show. Oh well....
And as a running joke, every time they popped the ladies' names and occupation on the screen, I would say, "Oh, she's an EX-Nanny because she ate one of the kids." or "Oh, she's a teacher. I bet she teaches Home Ec, but got fired because she baked and ate a kid," or "Oh, she's a waitress, I wonder how much of the food makes it to the table." A few of the jokes got a laugh out of Wifey, but most got evil glances and eye rolls.
NYC Prep's PC threw a party last night for the seniors, then didn't invite Jessie but instead invited Camile (a junior) and Taylor (a sophomore). WOW. Speaking of Camile, if I were she, I would have said something to the Harvard faculty member that wished me luck when applying, then saying I wouldn't get it. "Umm, and who are you? You majored in Russian Lit? OK. Shut up. PS, if you're not giving me the tour, why are you talking to me? Just wondering...."
Jessie maybe got a little karma in not getting invited to PC's party because she basically blew off the Operation:Smile people by ignoring the one and cutting off the other then saying the people want her to be a model. WHAT? WHO WANTS YOU TO BE ONE?
Lastly, Cole aka Taylor's Boyfriend proved to be one of the biggest D-Bags in the history of reality TV. First he mocks PC, aka his girlfriend's really good friend AND a guy that went out of his way to do something nice for Cole, for being gay. THEN he has the BRILLIANT idea to try and get his current girlfriend and his Ex together so they can be friends. Really smart idea there Cole. He is an ass to Seabass by parading Taylor in front of him and asks why he isn't friends with Taylor (umm, they were NEVER friends. why start now?) Finally he pulls a PC and shows up univited to a party that his girlfriend was invited to. Who does Cole think he is? PC? He isn't fabulous enough. THANKFULLY Taylor dumped him. Good call Tay-Tay.
So You Think You Can Dance's final four dances tonight with the results tomorrow meaning, NO CAT DEELEY UNTIL THIS FALL! (Oh no! SBF LOVES it some Cat!) Jeanine is still around, over Melissa and Janette, which is a shame. YES, she has boobs, but come on. Speaking of COME ON AMERICA, Evan is still involved? I know that he is cute and everything, but he is no Ade. (To that point Ade is no Brandon, but who is this season?) Brandon should walk away with it, edging out Kayla, who is awesome. What I am really excited about? Seeing the addiction dance again tomorrow. That HAS to be in there. Best routine of the season. Done. But Brandon should walk away with this one. If Big B doesn't win, it will be two straight seasons with an undeserving winner (three if you want to count Sabra over Danny, which was theivery.) Benji over Travis was fine because Benji was talented, but I thought Travis was better. Honestly though, let's just get through this season so I don't have to think about Joshua EVER AGAIN. Twitch wuz robt!
Finally, Paris picked a BFF last night and it was the surprise of a lifetime when she ditched BOTH Stefanie AND Tiniceia for Stephen, whom she eliminated last week. The right move in both my and Wifey's opinion. Stephen deserved to win over these two clowns and everyone seemed happy, included Stephen and Paris. good move Paris. Don't be afraid to admit you made a mistake. Good for Stephen the gay mormon. Chad from Brooklyn will be so proud of his fellow gay mormon. Now Paris is off to London to find a BBFF (British Best Friend Forever) on BBC. She's so loyal!

And honestly, some of those girls aren't that big and you can tell that even FBSlim is going for the girls that aren't as big. Just putting that out there. He doesn't want a heifer. He's a dude. He might want a little cushion, but he certainly wasn't picking the 240 girls as much as he made sure to pick all of the girls under two bills. And he sent the 37 yo to the curb. I think she was thinking this was the Fat Cougar show. Oh well....
And as a running joke, every time they popped the ladies' names and occupation on the screen, I would say, "Oh, she's an EX-Nanny because she ate one of the kids." or "Oh, she's a teacher. I bet she teaches Home Ec, but got fired because she baked and ate a kid," or "Oh, she's a waitress, I wonder how much of the food makes it to the table." A few of the jokes got a laugh out of Wifey, but most got evil glances and eye rolls.
NYC Prep's PC threw a party last night for the seniors, then didn't invite Jessie but instead invited Camile (a junior) and Taylor (a sophomore). WOW. Speaking of Camile, if I were she, I would have said something to the Harvard faculty member that wished me luck when applying, then saying I wouldn't get it. "Umm, and who are you? You majored in Russian Lit? OK. Shut up. PS, if you're not giving me the tour, why are you talking to me? Just wondering...."
Jessie maybe got a little karma in not getting invited to PC's party because she basically blew off the Operation:Smile people by ignoring the one and cutting off the other then saying the people want her to be a model. WHAT? WHO WANTS YOU TO BE ONE?
Lastly, Cole aka Taylor's Boyfriend proved to be one of the biggest D-Bags in the history of reality TV. First he mocks PC, aka his girlfriend's really good friend AND a guy that went out of his way to do something nice for Cole, for being gay. THEN he has the BRILLIANT idea to try and get his current girlfriend and his Ex together so they can be friends. Really smart idea there Cole. He is an ass to Seabass by parading Taylor in front of him and asks why he isn't friends with Taylor (umm, they were NEVER friends. why start now?) Finally he pulls a PC and shows up univited to a party that his girlfriend was invited to. Who does Cole think he is? PC? He isn't fabulous enough. THANKFULLY Taylor dumped him. Good call Tay-Tay.
So You Think You Can Dance's final four dances tonight with the results tomorrow meaning, NO CAT DEELEY UNTIL THIS FALL! (Oh no! SBF LOVES it some Cat!) Jeanine is still around, over Melissa and Janette, which is a shame. YES, she has boobs, but come on. Speaking of COME ON AMERICA, Evan is still involved? I know that he is cute and everything, but he is no Ade. (To that point Ade is no Brandon, but who is this season?) Brandon should walk away with it, edging out Kayla, who is awesome. What I am really excited about? Seeing the addiction dance again tomorrow. That HAS to be in there. Best routine of the season. Done. But Brandon should walk away with this one. If Big B doesn't win, it will be two straight seasons with an undeserving winner (three if you want to count Sabra over Danny, which was theivery.) Benji over Travis was fine because Benji was talented, but I thought Travis was better. Honestly though, let's just get through this season so I don't have to think about Joshua EVER AGAIN. Twitch wuz robt!
Finally, Paris picked a BFF last night and it was the surprise of a lifetime when she ditched BOTH Stefanie AND Tiniceia for Stephen, whom she eliminated last week. The right move in both my and Wifey's opinion. Stephen deserved to win over these two clowns and everyone seemed happy, included Stephen and Paris. good move Paris. Don't be afraid to admit you made a mistake. Good for Stephen the gay mormon. Chad from Brooklyn will be so proud of his fellow gay mormon. Now Paris is off to London to find a BBFF (British Best Friend Forever) on BBC. She's so loyal!

If you want me to watch, I'll need More to Love...
Fox re-aired last week's premire of More To Love last night, and I was able to take in the episode in the commercial breaks of Gossip Girl. I must say that I was a tad disappointed. I also get disappointed with new television shows because they always fail to live up to my expectations.
Alas....
It has been a while since A Double Shot at Love (the only dating show I watch. Sorry, I don't watch the Bachlor/ette or Falva of Love or I Love New York. I forget who these things work), so I must say that the first episode was a bit lame. ALL he did was meet the girls, then waddle around and try and make out with each of the girls. I realize they cannot move that fast, so that is probably why not much action happened, but COME ON....
Honestly, when I saw some of the ladies I thought, "She's not overly huge, she's just tall, 6'2 and maybe a BIT overweight," or, "she's not that big."
But there were a few that were pushing the limits of their dresses. And what was up with some of the dresses? As my grandfather used to say, "Last year's dress, this year's a$$." Hey, just because they MAKE that size, doesn't mean you should buy it and wear it. JUST SAYING. If you ARE big, there are ways to hide it. You could wear more flattering outfits, though I am sure Fox (who put their weights on the screen EVERYTIME they gave a confessional) MADE them wear revealing, low cut garmets. I also wonder if Fox made the one chick jump in the pool. That was weird. And she did it TWICE? Was there water left in the pool? (Sorry, that was too easy!)
Let's hope that they dude quits being a douchebag and starts being real. Because he was being a douchebag. "Maybe I could get a besso?" Tool! But maybe now that all of the intros are out of the way we can get the show I was hoping for. Come on Fox, let's pick it up. I REALLY want to like this show. I hope it turns out.
PS, and I am STILL waiting for some one (VH1, are you listening) to do a Shot at Love show with a MALE bisexual host. Could you imagine if Stephen from Paris Hilton's BFF started looking for love. Fabulous men catfighting with each other and with women. It would be AWESOME! ANd you KNOW we'd get some great drama....just saying. MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Big B's (and SBF's) Top Sr. Off. playmakers for GaHS09
Brian Jones, of Score Atlanta Fame (as well as the Falcons beat writer I know personally), lists his top senior offensive playmakers that fans of Georgia High School Football can see on the Friday Night Gridiron this season. While I do not agree with parts of the list, Big B believes this to be the case, so HEY, here you go! My list to follow....
10. Kendrum Malcome (SW DeKalb) – 6-foot. 213. Malcome was one of the key pieces to the Panthers playoff run last year. Is a big back that can break a big run at any given point of a game. His will play at Georgia in 2010.
9. Ed Christian (Lowndes) – 6-5. 280. Can play with a nasty streak and can dive defenders back as good as any lineman in the southeast. He has committed to Florida State.
8. Storm Johnson (Loganville) 6-foot-1. 217. Johnson was a piece of the Buford team that won a state title last year. Some say he is the best big back in the state because of his strength, physicality and his speed. LSU leads the race, but Florida, FSU, Penn State and Tennessee are also interested.
7. Markeith Ambles (Henry County) – 6-foot-3. 185. Ambles is considered to be the best route runners in the state. He is also known for having great body control. Has committed to Tennessee.
6. Tai-ler Jones (Gainesville) – 6-feet. 174. Jones in a guy hat can explode off the line and can do a lot of things when he is out in space. Had 1,000 yards receiving yards last year and committed to Stanford in April.
5. Blake Sims (Gainesville) – 6-0. 170. He is dangerous throwing the football and running with the football. He also a great pocket presence which will take him far in the next level. Has committed to Alabama.
4. Da’rick Rogers (Calhoun) – 6-foot-3 206. Rogers looks like a linebacker, but has the tools to be a elite college receiver. Rogers notched 1,300 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns in 2008. Rogers has committed to Georgia.
3. Mack Brown (MLK) – 5-foot-11. 185. Mack Brown can do it all as a back. He can break tackles, has excellent vision and his footwork is flawless. Will be a huge part of the MLK offense this season as he had 21 rushing touchdowns last year. Has recently committed to Florida.
2. Kolton Houston (Buford) – 6-5. 270. Could very well be the best guard in the state as he was opening holes for guys like Storm Johnson last year. He will be wearing the red and black in Athens in 2010.

Big B, I am going to have to disagree with your top 4, at least in the order. I think that while JaWuan James is the best pro NFL prospect of this bunch, I cannot put him No.1 on the list. I just cannot. Sorry. And when I say best NFL prospect, I mean RIGHT NOW. He could play next season with his build and ability. I think Rogers gets there too, but after he puts on some weight.

7. Ean Pemberton, RB, Grayson. This is top playmakers for 2009, not best college prospects. The Little Giant piled up the yards last season, despite his 5'3 frame. His coach Mickey Conn gushes about him and Pemberton will be the focal point of the offense without QB Tyler Horne around. That's fine with Pemberton, he'll keep mighty-mousing everyone.

Ambles will look to add some weight onto his 6'2 frame before heading to Lane Kiffinville, but no one will be able to slow this cat down in his senior season. It won't matter who is throwing, if he gets it close, Ambles will catch it. His body control is incredible.

Can't wait for Gainesville v FloBranch at the Brickyard.

Go and see (500) Days of Summer
Surprisingly funny, Pulp Fiction-like editing, twist at the end, Zooey Deschanel and FNL's Lyla aka Minka Kelly. Throw in Joseph Gordon-Levitt doing the Pacey Witter voice at various points in the movie and you have a great not-so-much-love-story movie.
The Tom Hanson (no, not the Braves pitcher) character had some great friends, a funny little sister and a great running joke about Ikea that I WILL steal if Wifey ever makes me go back there. (Oh, and I like his fashion style too, but Wifey says I could never pull it off. Oh well)
And who can blame him for falling for the hotter Deschanel sister Zooey, aka Summer Finn? (Sorry Bones). Zooey is Katy Perry-lite in the looks department and she can sing too, as she does in the movie. I am looking forward to seeing more of Zooey in main character roles instead of "The sister" or "the roommate" or "the angry friend". This movie proves she can do it, let's just hope she gets more chances to do so.
Finally, Minka Kelly's agent must be worried about her post-FNL career since he got her the cameo in (500) Days. I guess he doesn't want her to become "The Next Mischa Barton." I cannot blame the guy. If he was smart, he'd try and get her hooked up with Taylor Kitsch aka Tim Riggins. He is on the fast-track and it would do her career a great service to be the Vanessa Hudgens to his Zac Efron.
Forget that sidetrack though and just go and see (500) Days of Summer. Guys, you'll laugh, Girls, you'll enjoy the love-story-that-isn't. There's something for everybody. GO SEE IT!
