a braves review/preview!

To say that 2008 fell short of expectations for the Atlanta Braves would be an understatement. Several news outlets had the Braves playing in the World Series and a few noteworthy baseball writers had the Braves capturing the team’s first title since 1995. Injuries though wrecked this team’s chances at postseason play and sent the Braves to the franchise’s first 90 loss season since 1990, one year before the team started its record setting run of division titles. Will 2009 start another magical run? Before we can look to the future, we must learn from the past.
Entering this past season, the Braves figured a starting pitching rotation of John Smoltz, Tim Hudson, Tom Glavine, Mike Hampton and Jair Jurrjens would be just the formula to punch a ticket to postseason play. Then the injuries started. Reliever Pete Moylan was lost for the year after Tommy John Surgery and Mike Hampton, ready to pitch for the first time in nearly three years, suffered yet another injury warming up in the bullpen. Rafael Soriano would be on and off the disabled list all season and John Smoltz couldn’t beat what ailed him either. The long-time Braves ace started the season as a starter but later switched to reliever due to shoulder soreness. His stint as reliever was a short one though as he was eventually lost for the year with shoulder surgery. Free agent acquisition Tom Glavine’s return to Atlanta was marred by injury in June and then later having to shut it down in August due to elbow troubles. The final was Tim Hudson; the new ace had to undergo Tommy John Surgery and will miss most of 2009. Hampton was finally able to return but rust took a while to shake and he was unable to rally the team back into the playoff race.
The bullpen for Atlanta was great to start the season, but with injuries to the starters taking its toll it soon got taxed to the point of extreme ineffectiveness. Blaine Boyer, Jeff Bennett and Will Ohman all appeared in more in 70 games and the innings wore the arms down. Mike Gonzalez was fantastic as the team’s closer once back from his own Tommy John rehab, but he rarely got save chances.
The lineup began the year as an experiment with Yunel Escobar tabbed as the leadoff man with Chipper Jones and Mark Teixeira penciled in the No.3 and 4 spots. Mark Kotsay was supposed to offer something from the No. 2 spot while big things were expected from Jeff Francoeur as he pushed for a big-time contract. After Kotsay went down with an injury, Gregor Blanco’s emergence allowed Escobar to drop to the number two spot. Jones flirted with .400 early in the summer, but the injury bug bit him several times during the season as well.
Teixeira was dealt before the trading deadline for young Casey Kotchman, but Kotchman seemed to have trouble adjusting to the new league. Teixeira wasn’t lighting the world on fire for the Braves before he left though as his average was below .300 despite leading the team in RBIs. His disappointing start to the season was matched by Francoeur’s struggles. At one point Frenchy was optioned to AA-Mississippi for a weekend to try and clear his head.
Not everything was bad about the 2008 Braves though. Catcher Brian McCann was named to yet another all-star team. Also Kelly Johnson popped off a 22 game hitting streak over the final month of the season. Outfielder Josh Anderson also looks like he could be a terror on the basepaths next season.
Next season. The 2009 campaign could go one of two ways. Either the Braves begin a rebuilding effort as the team is projected to have close to 45M coming off the books. The farm system looks like everyone is one year away, so the 2009 edition could be heavy with stopgaps like Gregor Blanco, Martin Prado and Matt Diaz. The rotation could be turned over to the kids like Jo-Jo Reyes, James Parr and Phil Stockman as Smoltz, Glavine and Hampton are all free agents. OR Braves GM Frank Wren can take one final whack at it in the final year of Bobby Cox’s contract. The team could bring Smoltz and Glavine back (assuming they could return from the injuries) and then maybe sign a free agent pitcher such as Jon Garland and/or John Lackey with some of that cash. The Braves could also take a crack at a name like Pat Burrell to man leftfield and anchor the No. 4 or 5 spot in the lineup. Signing Burrell would also weaken division rival Philadelphia, the two-time defending division champions.
2008 is done now and the future has a real chance to be bright for Atlanta. The question is, will it be 2009 or 2011?

You call that a boxing workout?

I am sorry, but I had to laugh last night when LC on The Hills was "working out" by quarter-ass boxing with that personal trainer that Twitney dated last season (or two seasons ago, I forget). I say quarter-ass because she half-assing a half-assed work out, if that is possible. Barely twisting as she was punching. I mean pretending to work a real job is SOOOOOO tiring! Also, I think it is funny that Twitney and LC still use that personal trainer after the failed date. Does anyone else find that funny?
No? Just me? OK.....moving on

I thought last night's episode was just a little off. The Doug/Steph/LC drama....I don't understand it. Doug said it right: LC dumped me! I can't go out with someone else? But Doug and Steph messed up when She-Pratt tried to say, "Oh it was nothing. I have deleted his number from my phone, but I am still going to his party that I RSVPed two weeks ago before I knew him." Ummmm, so you got invited to a guy's house party you didn't know? And you deleted his number, but you are still going to his party? Huh? Were you afraid that you were included in the headcount, and it would screw up Doug's catering numbers? I guess you can say that she is polite?

Why didn't they just huddle and say, "hey let's play this off as we went out as friends and if LC can't be happy for us, she can go to HELL!"? That would make LC out to be the bad guy, but I guess her show would never let that happen. I thought the episode climax was interesting when both were turning on each other in a desperate attempt to stay on the show. Clinging!

Neither are very good actors though. Neither are as good as Heidi, but Heidi should be forced to give back some of her paycheck after her final scene. How come the director didn't yell "Cut!" when Heidi couldn't force the tears in the lunch scene with her mom? The mom was able to do it, but why couldn't Heidi? (On another note, I wonder if, when casting actors/actresses for these parts, Adam DiVello watches someone read, then says, "WOW, you are a great actor. Sorry you aren't right for us. We need actors that aren't very good so the dialogue looks forced. And we are shooting for absolutely ZERO personality. Go next door and try Mad Men. You are really good. Too good for us.")

Lastly, Spencer has just become a caricature of his former self. I am guessing he saw how he was in season 2 and 3 and which performances got more response on blogs and message boards, so he decided, "HEY, I need to be just a complete ass in order for more airtime." No one is THAT rude to his m-i-l, but he did it so I would blog about him this morning, so he can try and parlay that into a pepsi deal or something. I did like his classic "I know some great lunch spots!" line. I am fully convinced that Speidi sticks together for this season (causing great drama in the Montague household) before planning the big wedding all next season, only to run out on Spencer in the finale to hang out with LC, ala Wayne's World 2 and to a lesser extent The Graduate.

Oh, one quick PS, in the scenes from next week, it appears that LC has given Heidi a choice through Holly of: keep Spencer and lose me forever, drop Spencer and I would consider being your friend again. Let's forget the fact that LC did EXACTLY what Heidi did back in season 1 and move on. The Wifey, as we were watching the previews said, "DUMP HIM! CHICKS BEFORE DICKS!" I realize this is the girls rallying cry, kind of how like guys have that whole, "Bros before Hoes." But honestly, and I've said this before:THAT'S WHAT SINGLE PEOPLE SAY! I would put my Wifey before any BRO. And the only women that buy into the CHICKS BEFORE DICKS thing are single girls that are jealous of their friends with boyfriends who spend most Friday night trying to hook up with a dude at a bar/club. Also using the expression Chicks before dicks: any girls that enjoy field hockey and that drive Subarus. Sorry, it's true.

I blame this on Sex and the City, when honestly, ALL of those women were looking for a man who they could put before their men. Carrie really put the girls before Big? NO! Kristin Davis's character wanted a man more than ANYTHING. Come on. Guys can see RIGHT THROUGH THAT.

That Dawson is a crafty one

By this time you have probably guessed (correctly) that I am in the Pro-Pacey club. I think Dawson is a douchebag, at least through the first 18 episodes of season 4. I am going back to watch the entire Dawson's Creek series since I missed it the first time around. Well I have learned through watching this show is that Dawson sucks. They should have called it Pacey's Creek.
But I DO have to say touche to Dawson for his recent move with giving Joey money so she can go to Worthington. Good move there DC. What he is doing there is saying, "Yeah Pacey, you might be her favorite over me right now, but if I can't have her in Capeside, you can't either, because she is outta here!"
Now Pacey is going to have to either move to wherever Worthington is, or lose Joey.

Nice move DC. I have to hand it to you. You are one sneaky illegitimate child.

Other thoughts from this season 4 thus far.........
Where does Tobey live? I thought Jack was the only gay guy in Capeside? And if he DOESN'T live there, is he driving down to tutor kids and to drive drunk teens home? And how old is he? This show has so many inaccuracies it is driving me crazy!

And another PS, that driving drunk teens home service Jen was community serving...when they take the kids home, do they call the cops too since the kids are underage? Just wondering.

Did Dawson REALLY think that guy was going to give him a free tire and ride? Wouldn't that have been cleared up back at this guy's autobody shop on Senior Ditch day....which happened to fall in the middle of the week? HUH? Our senior skip day was on a Friday. Wouldn't that make sense? Yes, it would.

Also, after AI Brooks passed away, if I'm a 70+ single man in Capeside and I see Grams, I am WALKING AWAY. She is like a widowmaker spider. She dates you, you die. She walks my way, I cross the street.

Why is everyone giving Drew a hard time? Was it HIS fault that when he gave Jen an expensive birthday present that she then allowed Andie McPhee to "hold onto" for her when Jack approached? NO! NO it wasn't. I DO blame Jen on that one. If she didn't want the drugs, THROW THEM AWAY. But to go and frame Drew for the whole senior prank? That's wrong.

Oh, can someone please tell Jen that sleeping around at the age of 12 and drinking like a fish before you become a teenager isn't really hurting your parents. JUST YOU! Oh, I saw my dad sleeping with an 18 year old. I'll become an alcoholic slut. THAT'LL show him! Yeah Jen. YOU SHOWED HIM!

Finally, Gretchen, you are 21 and you are dating a 17 year old guy. In Virginia that's called Statutory Rape. Is Capeside REALLY hurting for guys that much? Or is she one of those pedophile types? ALso, that waterfront house in which she and Pacey reside...she can afford that bartending at Leary's Fresh Fish? REALLY?

But overall I am LOVING this series. Can't wait to see the season 4 finale!

The world will NEVER KNOW!

One interesting thought about the choke job that WAS USC last night: we will NEVER know the answer (thankfully) to,if USC had comeback to win 27-24, would the voters have moved USC down? The voters moved UGA down after the Dawgs went ON THE ROAD to open up conference play, just like USC did, and won ugly, just like USC would have done.

I doubt it. They probably would have been PRAISING USC for overcoming the tough environment and rallying from down early. THAT'S WHAT UGA DID!

All I am saying is, the voters started moving teams down (ie Georgia) for winning NOT by 50 points. I wonder if they would have punished USC too. I doubt it.

Sad.

But we will never know now. BEAVER ONE BEAVER ALL, LET'S ALL DO OUR BEAVER CALL!!!!

The debate is OVER

Why was everyone saying that THIS was the best USC team that Pete Carroll had ever had? People were ready to crown this team the best ever. WHY? could you answer me that? They tried to do this with the 2005-06 team too. Ummm Hey ever hear of the UNDEFEATED 2004 team? Matt Leinart won the Heisman, Bush, White, that defense. Why are people saying ANYTHING DIFFERENT? EVER? That team and certainly NOT this one. Deal with it folks. And now that they've lost, HA! They crushed a terrible UVA team (sorry Daddio) and they beat an Ohio State team that is on fumes without a QB and without a RB (unless Beanie's mom will let him out to play). They've had TWO WEEKS OFF already, which is weird, isn't it? And now they've lost their first Conference game. WOW. But seriously, this is the best team EVER....if you don't count the 2003 and 2004 and really the 2005 team. THE FOURTH BEST TEAM Carroll has had!

Now on to the picks.......
Minny @ #14 duh Ohio State. So Pryor is in at QB and Wells' mom said that he can play. Great. Minny is undefeated though (thanks to beating teams with a combined D-III record of 0-56), but duh Ohio State dots this victory with a few late Beanie scores to make it SEEM like a blowout.

Maryland @ #20 Klimpsen The Terps won against Cal a few weeks back and their coach celebrated by eating an entire Krispy Kreme. Klimpsen is STILL 0-1 on the season. Even with the win, the Tigers are STILL 0-1.

Michigan State @ Indiana. Two words Javon Ringer. That's all that needs to be said about this one. Is Tom Creen coaching the football team too? No? OK, Sparty wins.

UVA @ Duke. I hope Daddio isn't reading this, but WOW, I am about to pick Duke to win in these picks. Has that ever happened before? Let me go back and check....(Elevator muzak playing) No. I have NEVER picked Duke to win. Particularly against UVA. WOW. I will now spread honey on my rectum and crawl backwards into a bear cave.

UNC @ The U (Miami, not Florida. Sorry Louis Murphy. Didn't mean to confuse you). Butch Davis returns to the place he rebuilt and has since had to watch crumble under Larry Coker and Randy Shannon. Hmmmmm I wonder if this is how 1992 Tom Cruise feels when he jumps into a time machine and goes into the future to watch 2008 Tom Cruise. Go with The U though because Yates is out at QB for the Heels.

Ole Miss @ #4 Fla. If this game was at The Grove, with Snead and Florida's semi-struggles on offense and young defense, I'd put this in the upset special pick. But Florida's special teams are fantastic and the defense has been opportunistic thus far this year. This may be the best team Florida has faced thus far this season, but Houston Nutt just doesn't have the skillz to beat Florida this time. (PS, is there a more overrated team out there right now than Florida? Tebow hasn't looked dominating and the running game...well MAYBE Moody has turned a corner, but look at the competition. Miami? Tennessee? Hawaii? Three pretty terrible teams.Just kick the ball OB on punts and you are fine.)

#9 Wisco @ Michigan. Wow do I hate Wisconsin. Why? I don't know, but I just do. I hear the town of Madison is awesome, but I just DON'T like the Badgers. For whatever reason. They win this game, and I'm not saying Wisco isn't good. No, they are solid, but I just don't like them. As a program I mean. But the Badgers burrow to a win.

Tennessee @ #15 Auburn. I remember the LAST time Tennessee was backed into a corner with everyone calling for Fulmer's head and the team was coming off a big loss and were playing a ranked team....they crushed UGA last season. I think it HAPPENS AGAIN! THIS GAME. Tennessee wins with the ground game.

#25 Frezno State @ UCLA. I think FZU wins this one JUST to make Tennessee and in turn the SEC look even worse with every UCLA loss this season. Thanks Fulmer. But way to be Tommy Bowden 2.0 and just win one game a year to save your job. Wow! Maybe you and Tommy Bowden can start a little club and call it the hotseat club or something. You can vote on each other's big games to win and which little games to blow.

Colorado @ FSU. I REALLY want to go with FSU because the Noles are in Florida, and Colorado can't possibly win two of these games in a row, ON THE ROAD no doubt. But the Buffs do have that outstanding freshman playmaker and FSU has a pair of youngster QBs while the grandson of Braveheart sits on the bench....Hey, you know what? This ain't intramurals brother. GO WITH COLORADO!

Purdon't @ Notre Dame. Why isn't Notre Dame ranked yet? I mean they WON over Michigane and SDSU, right? I know they lost last week, but when UGA wins, they move down, I figured when the Irish lost they might move up? I figured the voters smoked enough sticky icky icky to do this stuff? I mean, HOW DO YOU WIN IN CONFERENCE ON THE ROAD AND MOVE DOWN? USC LOST on the road in conference. THINK ABOUT THAT! UGA won. Yeah, you guys feel dumb now, DON'T YOU! Wait, I need to make a pick here...Purdue and Curtis Painter.

#24 TCU @ #2 OU. OU is very excited about the chance to move to #1 following the USC loss....They win here, but JUSTICE IS DONE IN THE WORLD BECAUSE UGA WILL (assuming they win) LEAPFROG THEM as the voters correct a previous wrong! Yeah. I am saying it. Actually I WILL be rooting for OU here, because I want as MANY of these little crap mid-major, Non-BCS schools to lose so the NCAA will NEVER INVITE ANY OF THEM to a BCS bowl again. Who wants to see that Sugar bowl again? (I mean I'll watch a tape of it, but it was NEVER close and the outcome NEVER in doubt) OU Booms

Miss State @ #5 LSU. Well it seems the Tiger have found a QB in Lee now that Hatch had to leave the game to finish a thesis on cold fusion. (really an injury, but the guy went to Harvard. That's kinda funny). But I read where the FIRST thing this guy's dad said to him on the phone was "Hey Jarrett, what were you DOING on that interception?" Nevermind, Great game and big win. or Hello, I'm proud of you and I love you Son. Nope the dad played the Capriati card. Nice. Hey Mr. Lee, your son will never play in the NFL. How about you let him enjoy these college wins before he starts a career of GA,QBC,OC...? LSU wins this one and Lee hits ignore on his phone after the game.

#22 Illi @ #12 PSU. Yep, Paul Mac picked Penn State to win the Big 11. They would need to win in Happy Valley to do that. My question is, why is GameDay not at THIS GAME? GameDay hates UGA and has wet dreams about all things Big 11, right? Wait, they don't really hate UGA. It is just that the whole crew is made up of Kirk (OSU guy, so he isn't a fan of the SEC b/c of the last two years) Lee (Prolly never got a coaching offer from the SEC) Chris (that guy just looks OLD), Desmond (a big 11 guy) Robert Smith (OSU guy) Lou (coached at SoCar) Mark May (Pitt team has history with UGA) Jesse Palmer(Florida guy). I of course am kidding here. There isn't a bias. Once UGA wins a title, they will be ALL OVER their jocks too, just like they are with Florida and Ohio State. It'll happen. Just wait. Penn State in this one!

VaTech @ Nebraska. I know some Cornhusker fans and they say Nebraska has a chance. Sorry. They do not. VaTech seems to have it rolling again and the Huskers don't have the players. Since it is in Lincoln, maybe it will be close, but VaTech, UNFORTUNATELY will win this one.

THEY PAY THESE GUYS...OVER THE TABLE
Falcons @ Carolina. Before the year started, this was clearly a Falcons loss. The Falcons have taken care of two terrible teams, and many can't figure out what this Panthers team is. A lot are saying this is a Falcons win....i just can't do that. Panthers win. Plain and simple. Sorry Body.

LOCK O' The WEEK
Arkie @ #7 Texas. This game was pushed back because of the Hurricane and despite Petrino trying to get it delayed until 2010, the game is ON this weekend. PS, no one has gotten back to me on when the gas is coming back. Only some a-hole who is trying to get the UGA/Bama game cancelled this weekend. Yeah, that'll happen. So while I take inventory and my wife is out looking at houses, I know MY car won't be using much gas. Just saying. Not a lot of gas is going to be used by THIS GUY. Thankfully. Hopefully by next week when I need gas again it will be flowing like Texas's points in this game. Horns hook Petrino.

UPSET SPECIAL
UAB @ SoCar. Remember, THIS was the game that Spurrier said RB Mike Davis and a few other key players would be missing, NOT the UGA game or Vandy or NCSU games. You know, games they should have been because they WEREN'T the 5th games of the year! Come on Spurrier. Suspend them for the NEXT available game! But you are struggling so much, you needed any win you could get. People are calling for your head. Not good for Spurrier. But really though, if SoCar is calling for his head, WHO ARE THEY GOING TO GET? really? Skip Holtz? ECU was exposed last week. Sorry little engine that could. UAB and Neil Hidi-hidi-hidi-HO Calloway WIN THIS ONE. Why? Karma. THAT'S WHY!

Local rooting interest
GT is off. I thought it was GREAT that GT got so excited that they FINALLY beat an SEC Bulldog team. Too bad it was Miss State. GT is going to be pretty good, but let's not be bragging that you took it to an SEC school. That would be like the UGA basketball team bragging last season that they took a game from the MIGHTY ACC conference in Wake. (Wait, Felton did do that. Oops.)

#8 Bama @ #3 UGA. Before the season started, this game looked like a lock. Bama was still a year away. Well Bama got a big bump when they beat Klimpsen, then crushed Arkie. Do I think they are #8 in the country? No. Are they good. Yes. Can they beat UGA? I think Mark Richt likes going against Nick ever since the 2003 SECCG. I say Dawgs win the Blackout by 11. 21-10 maybe. John Parker Wilson doesn't care me and while that Cody guy is 482 lbs, come on. Knowshon is on a Heisman campaign here. I think he goes for another 150+ with 1 TD and Matty Stafford tosses two scores in the win. Why do I think this? Because Richt wants to show AJ Green is BETTER than Julio Jones. I think Richt is a little irked by some of this stuff out there that maybe he isn't as good as Saban and whatnot. With the Funeral comments and the Arenas "have you seen his highlights" comments. I think Richt is fired up and the team gets a HUGE WIN going into the off-week!

GO DAWGS! GO BLACKOUT! GO STRAIGHT TO #1 by 11:56pm Saturday night!

Weekly High School football update

Yes I was in the AZ last Friday, but I still have my finger on the pulse of GAHSF! I did the show for Pete's Sake!
My thoughts.....................
North Cobb has REALLY fallen off ever since I gave them some love after MLKing. That's Shane Queen! And as for Derrick Lott saying UGA isn't a lock, ummm you should EMBRACE an offer IF they give you one. If I were UGA, I say go after the two LBs (Davis and/Jones) or the Braden Smith kid from Booker T. DONE. Derrick Lott, no thank you.

Norcross, I thought you had NGHS beat! a 19-0 lead WITH DJ Adams, but somehow you lose? WOW. I was wrong on that team too. But at the end of the year they will be THE #4 seed you DO NOT want to face come playoff time. That is fo-sho!

I know Meadowcreek sucks, but their QB is fantastic. What numbers! I wonder where he will transfer to next year...i mean move in with his aunt. That's it

Hey Buford, could you please move up one classification? Please?

Grayson is the real deal. I spoke with the head coach Mickey Conn there yesterday and he said that his interior lines have been the biggest surprise this season. They look strong and could take this team deep into the playoffs. Plus, tyler horne can throw it around. He was given the chance against South Gwinnett last week and boy did he. Now you can't stack the box to stop Ean and JEJ. And Conn said that he will take what the D gives him. Wow, to have options. I am thinking that Brookwood's three year reign might be over....
but then Brookwood hasn't lost in 27 straight region games, dating back to 10/1/04. Yeah, you read that correctly. But I think as good as Coach Crews is, he said it right when I spoke with him yesterday; "This team's goal is to reach the playoffs and maybe win a school record 4th straight." Just get to the playoffs Coach. That would be an accomplishment considering how you started and what you had returning.

Parkview seems to be clicking now with Brandon Jacobs have 7tds the last two games. He is headed to Auburn...unless he gets drafted by the MLB. And TaRon Squires can run too! This game against Grayson should be HUGE!

As for folks just now realizing Zach Mettenberger can chuck it...umm did you not listen to High School High Five last year when Fletcher Proctor and Paul Mac gushed about his arm, having seen him LAST SEASON. I know he has ONLY gotten stronger, and it will be great to see what he can do WITH TALENT. (Why doesn't Oconee County HS have better talent? Just wondering)

I was RIGHT about Rashard Smith of Dublin. he had 5 INTs last week. I know he plays QB, but he also plays CB. He INTERCEPTED 5 passes. HEY OPPONENT, THROW AWAY FROM HIM!

Lastly, I would take the team with no major college prospects but that plays like a team over the team that has the D-1 commits but doesn't function together well. I'd take Dalton (haven't had a losing season in 48 years) over Norcross RIGHT NOW. Just saying. If they played tomorrow and I had to pick a winner, I am going with Stryker Brown and the Catamounts over Prince Kent and Co.

This is a bit annoying

So there is a gas shortage in Atlanta (not so says Gov Sonny Perdue, but then he also once wrote in to the newspaper telling them to stop being mean to UGA) and it hit me last night. Yep, I pretty much ran out of gas UP IN CUMMING last night. My boy JCole helped me out, as did my wonderful wife, but the lines are CRAZY! I feel like I am in the opening of the movie Miracle!
But after a few lines, I finally have filled my car up and am ready to go....but the thing I really have to say is....WHY IS THERE A GAS SHORTAGE?!

Paul Mac may have to weigh in here, but WHY IS THERE A SHORTAGE? There is oil in Alaska, but a bunch of tree-huggers won't let us drill. Instead we have to be nice to the sheiks in the Middle East because we wouldn't want to hurt a Caribou! (I know I didn't spell that correctly, I don't care.)

And as for the refinery issue, why is Georgia's in FREAKING TEXAS? Umm can't we put one up where Hurricanes and Tornadoes WON'T cause a gas freak out? Gimme a break here! Throw one up over here in GA. Let's make this happen.

Bottom line, let's drill in Alaska and get more refineries. THAT WAY, maybe gas can be had WITHOUT waiting 45 minutes to pay $50 to fill up my Honda!

YOU BROKE UP WITH HIM! HE'S ALLOWED TO DATE

I got EVEN more mad last night watching The Hills. I think the girl rule about how "a girl isn't allowed to date one of her friend's ex's" is a STUPID RULE. Honestly.
Can some female PLEASE answer to this? What is the deal with that? Especially when THE GIRL ENDED IT. I can understand you don't want to stab your friend in the back if he dumped her for you, but if the GIRL DUMPED THE GUY only because they DIDN'T HAVE CHEMISTRY (and for no other reason), why isn't the guy fair game?

Hmmmm? Ladies? Got any answers? It seems like this rule is made so the girl can win in the post-relationship race, but it is unfair....to the guy.

I can see if Doug cheated on LC with someone, then went after one of LC's friends, in this case She-Pratt. But that's NOT what happened. LC dumped Doug because he has the personality of dry-wall.

I think the whole girls claiming a guy for life and holding his rights is wrong. In sports, a team can draft a guy, but they only have a certain time to hold his rights. After a while he becomes a free agent. Is this how it works with girls? And for that matter, if an NFL team say drafts Kregg Lumpkin, but then cuts him before the season starts, ANY TEAM can sign him. Say the Falcons drafted him, but then cut him. Should the Bucs, Saints and Panthers not sign this guy because they are in the same division as Atlanta? NO! He is OPEN. AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE.

and PS, if you want to be on a date, CALL IT A DATE DOUG AND STEPH! Or if it is just a friends thing, then that's what it is. Who cares? Don't hide it. Explain the situation. Doug was in the wrong to call it a business dinner, but if it WAS just friends, then who cares? And if LC has a problem with friends dining together, then she is a fascist plain and simple.

Otherwise, I thought the episode was funny in terms that LC was in Italy and decided to come home early. Apparently she saw all she needed to see of Italy in 3 days. Yep, my buddy Paul Mac went there on his Honeymoon and didn't get to see everything he wanted to in 10 days, but LC saw ALL of Italy in 3 days. Good work LC. I guess the Italian GAP is just like the GAP in The OC, so who cares?

The ASU fans were bigger losers than their team!

I can't say enough about going to another stadium, sitting there amongst the home fans and then watching your team kick the home team's butt. Then watching those losers leave the stadium, pompoms drooping by the third quarter while you whoop it up.

Yeah, UGA took it to Arizona State last Saturday and should have won by at least 11 more. The Knowshon pitch, the Blair Walsh FG miss after a blocked punt, the two fourth quarter goalline stalls. Yep, UGA should have been in the 40s, but that's OK. They won ON THE ROAD by 17 against a team that up until a week ago was #15 (they will probably finish 5-7, but that's beside the point. ASU isn't very good this season.)

I found it quite funny that half of their fans didn't know what some UGA fans were doing when they mocked ASU's OWN hand signal. Basically, ASU does the Shocker, but they spread the index and middle finger and say it is the pitchfork. So when UGA fans do it upside down, why did a woman yell, "What is that? We don't do gang signs in Arizona!" Ummmm, OK.

I also loved it when, as we were walking to our seats, people were yelling, "You guys are going to miss Michael Vick!" Ummm, MV7 never played for UGA. Were you trying to say you are going to beat us like Michael Vick beat dogs? Why is ASU aspiring to be convicted felons? He is your role model?

I also appreciated the middle fingers to my mother-in-law. You arizona folks STAY CLASSY!

Since we were seated by the student section, it was EXTREMELY funny when UGA would get a penalty and the students would chant "CHEATERS! CHEATERS!" Nice. That really makes UGA feel bad. I also loved it when ASU had a penalty and some of the UGA fans (myself included) chirped "Cheaters!" They actually shouted at us, "Get your own chant!" THAT WAS A CHANT? REALLY?

Oh there was also the fool that after Blair Walsh missed a 56 yard FG that would have made it 17-0, he actually turned to us and was smiling while he signaled NO GOOD. Hey dude, SCOREBOARD, or am I stealing ANOTHER one of your CHANTS

I also liked when UGA went to the screen in the second quarter 5 of 6 plays ALL THE WAY DOWN THE FIELD and eventually scored, the fans behind us started yelling, "do something else. If you guys win, it's just cause you run that play over and over!" Well first of all, if we win, it's because we are BETTER THAN YOU, and once you STOP that play, WE'LL STOP RUNNING IT.

Gosh if you guys win, it's ONLY because you guys were stronger, faster, smarter, and BETTER ALL-AROUND than we were...

And to the guy who said, "Oh you just made Rudy Carpenter mad! WATCH OUT NOW!" after Rennie Curran sacked him and his helmet popped off, was he made when he hightailed it out of the stadium before halftime, or when he was sacked 3 more times? Or when he was intercepted (but called back on a bogus penalty-CHEATER!). I guess he was SOOOOOOOOO fired up he scored a TD on a throw where Danelle Ellerbe was wrestled to the ground so he couldn't cover his man off the blitz. I guess, much like the Hulk, YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE RUDY UPSET! Actually it looked like Rudy was upset with his OWN O-LINE and running game. 4 yards? HA!

Bottom line, but the middle of the third quarter, there were more UGA fans left in the stadium than ASU fans, and I don't think I got a single good game or apology from the students when we walked past their section. I guess they had to make it back to 7-11 before their shifts started. LOSERS!

I think it was SO CUTE that some of them ACTUALLY THOUGHT they were going to win. That is SO CUTE!
but you lost....SHOCKER!....i mean pitchfork!

The Picks ONE DAY EARLY!!!

As you all know, I will be hanging with Rod Tidwell this weekend at the UGA beatdown of Arizona State. I leave tonight and won't be able to post the picks tomorrow, so I am giving them to you ONE DAY EARLY! How about that!?!?!?!

Tonight
#21 West Va @ Colorado. This ain't intramurals Brother, This is Division 1 Thursday night FOOTBALL! Pat White and Company are too good to lose to this team on the rise in Boulder. The Buffs will be good, just not in this game. BUT all of this goes away if Pat White goes to one of Colorado's infamous parties before the game and gets messed up. West Va on the road is always questionable though because they see a whole bunch of hot women that they AREN'T related to and sometimes that is distracting....But still take the Neers!

Saturday....
Troy @ #13 Duh Ohio State University..Gotsa go with Ohio State here. Terelle Pryor will be doing a whole bunch of the quarterbacking for the Buckeyes. But wait, now that Tony Franklin (and his AMAZING offense) isn't there anymore, perhaps Troy will win? No, upon further review the Troy team will NOT be using players from their Sandy Springs campus so I am going with tOSU and with the win, they will probably be ranked ahead of UGA after UGA wins and still moves down. That makes sense!

#15 ECU @ NC State. So NCState could have gotten Skip Holtz but they went with Tom O'Brien? Interesting. I will TOTALLY bring this up EVERYTIME Skip plays against a school with an overinflated ego had a position open. Ole Miss, SoCar, etc...ECU Wins because NC State is turrbull!

Temple @ #16 Penn State. Paul Mac has gone ahead and called it: BOLD PREDICTION: PSU WINS THE BIG 11! The Big 11 champ doesn't lose to TEMPLE! Just teams from the SEC and Pac-10....HA!

Iowa @ Pitt. Remember when both of these coaches were HOT? I hate having to pick this game, but go with Pitt at home. Wanny DOES have a nice mustache that will ALWAYS be hot. Weren't they picked to win the Big Easy? Not by ME mind you, but by someone I think.

#9 Bama @ Arkie. Tony Barnhardt of the AJC wondered the other day if Arkansas will lose the remainder of their games this season. I would LAUGH at that. But then again, i don't hate Booby Petrino because he didn't stab MY team in the back. And COME ON Falcons fans, did you REALLY want Petrino as your coach? I think NOT. Bama ROLLS over Arkie and Dick is ONCE AGAIN rendered useless by a Crimson Tide. (think about it....)

SCSU @ #23 Klimpsen...I love it when the Tiggers play teams like this and the Tiger Rag faithful sing their little "Hold that tiger" song and then SIT DOWN TO WATCH THE GAME. You may have beaten the Citadel and NCSU and this game, but you are 0-1. Deal with it!

Buffalo @ #5 Mizzou. I am going with the Tigers, but remember those MTV shows The Fraternity Life and Sorostitute Life? They were based at Buffalo. Remember that? If I EVER had any second thoughts on maybe I should have joined a fraternity or gone Greek, after watching those shows I am SO GLAD I didn't do an elephant walk. Tigers win

Wyoming @ #14 BYU. The Cougars (HEY NOW!) are trying to break into the BCS. Maybe you should play a REAL team and NOT WYOMING or UCLA (59-0) Wait, UCLA beat Tennessee. Crap! Way to go Tennessee!

Zona @ UCLA. The Bruins just lost to BYU 59-0 and Zona plain stinks. BUT I am headed out to Wildcat territory in a few hours and I don't want to get beaten up at the airport. Wildcats win this one.

Boise State @ #17 Oregon. I was wrong about Oregon. My bad. Your ugly green unis helped you win against Purdon't Good for you guys. Are you NOW going to ask for credibility for beating a mid-major? Nope. Welcome to UGA's world. You SHOULD win this and when you do, "well you were supposed to?" If you lose, HOW COULD YOU LOSE TO THOSE GUYS? No wonder no one wants to play these fools. I'd rather play GaSouthern too. Ducks quack out a win

Notre Dame @ Michigan State. The Fupas v Sparty. People are TOO QUICK to say that Notre Dame IS BACK (TURNER THIS INCLUDES YOU!). You beat Javon Ringer and maybe I will say that. But I have to think Ringer will run all over the Fupas. PS, now that Weis REALLY can't exercise because of the torn ACL, do you think his FUPA will get BIGGER?

VaTech @ UNC. I can't call this one an upset because I think EVERYONE is calling it an upset. If everyone says it, it isn't one. Like how a sleeper is no longer a sleeper if everyone says they are a sleeper. UNC beats VaTech at home. GT should have beaten VATECH in that "electric" atmosphere up there last week. Heels win in LOVELY Keynan Stadium

Miami @ TAMU. WOW, go back to 1988 and this might have been a fun game. But not now. Miami looked pretty good defensively against Florida for 3 QTRS and I know several Miami fans, so I will go with them. Plus I am STILL pissed that TAMU didn't interview any African Americans for this job before giving it to Sherman. That STILL pisses me off! Mock outrage by the way. Though GW Bush was appreciative of TAMU for doing that to get Jesse Jackson off his back over the whole Katrina thing.

#18 Wake @ #24 FSU. OK, so one ranked team deserves to be ranked and the other does not. WOW that I am saying Wake deserves to be ranked and FSU doesn't. WHERE am I living? Honestly though Wake has a fantastic QB in Riley Skinner who is going home (sort of) and FSU has two young QBs splitting time. Advantage Wake. Game WAKE. But just don't ask Josh Howard to be on the sidelines during the National Anthem....

Vandy @ Ole Miss. I would actually LIKE to watch this game. I think it would be a really good game. I am taking Ole Miss because it is AT the Grove and I think Snead is a pretty darned good QB. Plus Greg Hardy will play a bit and that should fire up the Rebel faithful. Hey, How is Jerrell Powell doing? Boy was THAT much ado about nothing, huh? Yep. Saw that one coming.

#6 LSU @ #10 Auburn. AUBURN JUST WON A GAME 3-2! Yeah. And Chris Todd is still their QB? And Brad Lester was taken out on a stretcher. Yeah Auburn fans, you guys are just sandbagging until LSU comes to town. Even without a stud at QB, LSU STILL has a stable of runningbacks and a DLine that is just WAITING to beat up Brandon Cox-er I mean Chris Todd. 17 points? This should be the lock of the week! LSU Rolls and wins the SEC West.

Professional ranks-if you can call them that...
KC @ Atlanta. I will be interested to see Dorsey against Matt Ryan. I DID think it was funny that yesterday on 790 the Zone's Afternoon Saloon, newbie David Pollack said that Dorsey and Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson "aren't anything to [him]. What have they done?" Ummm Davey, I know you were a Dawg (that cost us the Florida game in 2002 with the forward lateral FYI) but WHAT DID YOU DO IN THE PROS? just asking...
Falcons win though because Tyler Thigpen went to Coastal Carolina. Yeah, he's KC's QB until they draft Matthew Stafford this April.

Lock of the week: Deadbolt
Rice @ #7 Texas. The Longhorn's game against Arkie was Ike'd out last week, so Mack Brown and co have had two weeks to scheme for Rice? They might score 100

Upset of the week: A guy can hope right?
#4 Florida @ Tennessee. The ONLY thing I can say is that the Vols DO play better at home. Florida STILL doesn't have a running game. Maybe Fulmer has gotten this guys up for this game because YET ANOTHER LOSING SEASON or 4th place finish MIGHT spell the end of Fulmer. So I am hoping they get geeked up and Eric Berry makes a few plays...and maybe Tebow sleeps late and misses the first three quarters. Only hope.

Local rooting interest!
Miss State @ GT. GT should be 3-0, but instead they are 2-1. Make it 2-2 after this game. If VaTech managed to shutdown (for the most part) this offense, Miss State will do it even more. This won't be 3-2 like Missy State's last game, but 13-10, I wouldn't be surprised. Bulldogs do it for the SEC.

#3 UGA @ Arizona State. Hey Rudy Carpenter, I TOLD you to watch out for UNLV last week. I told you fans to quit asking for UGA. You didn't take care of business and now UGA's thumping of you won't be while you are ranked #12 in the country. THANKS ASS-HATS! Oh well. Will UGA Blitz? will they stay back? Will it matter? NO! People thought Hawaii had a pretty strong offense last season too. The ONLY chance ASU has is if UGA's plane doesn't arrive in time. (But if they are flying AirTran, they probably WILL be late). Anyways, look for me on TV. I'll be the a-hole trying to high five ASU fans (since I think I will be sitting in their section) and yelling, "It's JUST! TOO! EASY!"

Why Can't we win the friggin' Ryder Cup?

Honestly, the USA just can't win that thing. It took a minor miracle to win it back in 1999, and we haven't held it since then. The Presidents' Cup we can do. We can beat the REST of the World, just not Europe for whatever reason.
And this year we will go into the three day event sans Tiger Woods. Oh yeah, we REALLY HAVE A CHANCE NOW....
And how come sergio is so darned good at those things? He can't win a major event, but he turns into Mr. Invincible come Ryder Cup time. All of the backslapping and sneering....I think the last time was because of his mustache! Why doesn't the US just put Tiger up against him (obviously not THIS YEAR) and just make Sergio crap his pants? I just remember when Tiger went up against Sergio in the final pairings of all of those majors and Sergio poopooed his way to the 18th green where he sadly walked off the green, defeated yet again.

I mean I can understand why the US loses a bunch. Phil is the second
best player. Furyk might be #3. But the US normally has the #1 EVER. I guess when you step back, after Tiger, American Golf kind of sucks. Ben Curtis? Phil? Furyk? Anthony Kim Kenny Perry are our best hopes?

And now without Tiger, we are going up against Ian Poulter and Paul Casey and Luke Donald and Westwood and Sergio. And Harrington, only the hottest golfer in the world. Game set match.

Crap. We suck! We need the redeem team on this motha! Is Coach K available? And last time I checked, Phil played pretty well with Fred Couples back in 2006 at Augusta down the stretch. Kept him loose. Why can't we throw Freddie out there? Would Freddie really hurt this team? I can ONLY him cracking up the guys, taking pressure off, and maybe his experience could shake his opponent on Sunday's match-play.

I just have to hope that this band of underachievers can pull a 1980, but make it a miracle on Bluegrass.

Arby's to buy Wendy's?

I heard this news and it was a bit troubling. First off, Arby's always wants to be "different is good" and everything, but then they go and buy the #2 hamburger fastfood chain in America? Just tell me the baconator and the Junior Bacon Cheeseburger aren't going anywhere!
I guess this isn't such a bad thing. I would LOVE a baconator with some of those curly fries.

I just think it is kind of weird that Arby's is now getting down and dirty with a hamburger after trying to not do that for so long. Oh well. Everyone sells out eventually. But I guess they are more BUYING IN rather than Selling out. Whatever.

I also hope this is the end of the racoons in the Wendy's ads. And can we get rid of that "wendy" voice over girl please? Bring back the Dave Thomas actor. That wasn't the REAL Dave Thomas, the guy that died a few years back. Just bring back a Dave Thomas "Character." I mean, if you faked it once, just fake it again.

And Wendy's PLEASE bring back the Superbar! I just to LOVE that superbar. I would go there with my Dad on our Wednesday night dinners. Fantastic. You had a SALAD BAR, a Pudding bar, a mexican bar. It was awesome. Dipping the pepperonis in the nacho cheese and dalloping a little ranch on top. NICE!

On that note, I wish MORE places would offer some sort of buffet bar of their food. CiCi's does for Pizza and Pizza Hut used to. Come on Zaxby's, let's have a salad bar and some chicken fingers out there with a big vat of Zax's Sauce. I would be willing to pay $14.99 a pop for an all-you-can-eat Zaxby's Bar.

McDonald's could have the fries and chicken nuggets. maybe even the mini hamburgers. I'd probably go 8.50

Taco Bell. HERE YOU GO! 9.99 and you have the taco bar, the burrito bar, the nacho bar. Heck, I'd pay 12.99 for that.

Chick-fil-A Waffle Fries, salad, wraps, nuggets. Fruit. Grilled chicken. Make it happen! I would likely go to the Zaxby's bar first, but you get the idea.

Why won't more places do this? Because they are afraid I would come probably.

How has Rich McKay messed up? Let Paul count the ways

Watching the Atlanta Falcons lose (yet again) to the Tampa Bay Bucs last Sunday reminded Sportsbyfletch correspondent Paul Mac JUST HOW MUCH former GM Rich McKay put the Falcons behind the 8-ball. The team's receivers dropped balls, Keith Brooking couldn't tackle Warrick Dunn. The D-Line other than John Abraham got ZERO pass rush on the Lush Brian Griese. Paul decided to give us a Top Ten Bone-headed moves by Rich McKay!

#1 Signing Ed Hartwell

#2 cutting Chris Draft. Completely gutted the middle of the defense that was not great but not awful.

#3 Jimmy Williams (titanic bust! We traded up to get this jerk! for the record I was
happy about this pick when it occurred)

#4 Michael Jenkins (in the first round? Who else was taking him?) OT's
NT? MLB's? HELLO!?!?!

#5 DeAngelo Hall (great athlete, bad football player no brain)

#6 Mike Vick's contract. 'Nuff said. Stupid move!

#7 Not fixing the kicking situation ever. Mason Crosby on the board in
the sixth? No, let's go with 90 year old Morton Anderson!

#8 Jamaal Anderson could prove to be the worst of the bunch when you
consider they lost Patrick Kerney in the process (see #6 as the reason
for that. Honorable mention: Ovie Mughelli's 18M contract but the
overpayments have been going on before he got to the team

#9 hiring the wrong coach twice (and their subsequent hires of bad
coaches). Good year with Dan Reeves team and down hill henceforth for Jim Mora Jr. and the classic college coach failed gamble with Capt A hole last year..

#10 Sticking with Rod Coleman over taking Amobi Okoye. see #8.

Thanks Paul!

Katie Holmes is SERIOUSLY starting to piss me off

I was extremely excited when Pacey and Joey got onto a boat and sailed off for a summer, but now that they are back (PS, I have just started watching Pacey's Creek from the beginning since I never saw the first four seasons originally) she is doing to Pacey EXACTLY what she did to Dawson....MAKE the boyfriend AND THE VIEWER HATE HER!

I mean HONESTLY, I thought you LOVED Pacey, but then you go all uberbitch on him. Is that necessary? And how about you pick a few more fights with him? Oh, and can we PLEASE move past Dawson and all of that drama? And another note to Dawson, why were you mad at Pacey? All he did was get the girl. Shouldn't you be more mad at the girl for offering herself to you, WHICH YOU TURNED DOWN, then you are shocked when she goes elsewhere? Come on DCreek. But way to get back at Pacey, start dating his sister. That'll show him. Wait. No, no it won't.

I also noticed that Dawson went from the Buttcut to the greasy look. I have to say that this is better.

Bottom line, Dawson and Joey, it THEY were on the True Love in the hurricane, I'd have LEFT them out there. That's right. Let them tough it out.
Then Pacey could have gotten with another chick (just not Crazy Andie or druggie-slut since the age of 11 Jen Lindley.)

Also, this Drew Valentine guy. I am glad the show decided to bring Abby Morgan back in the form of a male. Kind of like when The OC brought Luke back as Volcheck.
Glad to see the writers don't put themselves into a corner.....

Congrats to Roomie

Roomie got the best birthday present probably of her life from JCole last Saturday when she got engaged. Congrats to Roomie and Happy Birthday to her today.

PS, I am not certain how I will look in a bridesmaid dress, but I promise I will shave my legs.

I am so hot!

Happy Birthday and a big Congrats out to Roomie Cubes aka JTrain.

Blue Devils look to get back on track

Perhaps Glen Fry of the Eagles said it best when speaking of great expectations: everybody’s watching you. The Norcross Blue Devils had a 22-3 record over the last two seasons and Coach Keith Maloof’s 2008 team had the players back to make a long run in the state playoffs. Last season’s leading rusher DJ Adams returned from a 1,400 yard season and seemed poised to go for 2000 his senior year before heading off to become a Maryland Terrapin. His standout WR/DB Prince Kent had a Miami scholarship in his pocket and looked to shine now out of the shadow of last season’s wide receivers. However in the team’s opening game in the Kell Powerade Classic, the Blue Devils couldn’t find the endzone against Camden County. “The game proved we’ve got inexperience in some places, but [the team] did a reasonable job,” said Coach Maloof about his team’s performance in their first appearance in the Georgia Dome. “A few key people were injured in the second half, but it was 14-6 until the last thirty seconds,” said Maloof of the game. “Hopefully you learned from the game.”
His offense reached the redzone several times in the game but never found paydirt, something Maloof called, “disappointing.” The team and players worked hard and the next week against South Gwinnett, the Blue Devils were 4-4 in walking away with points once reaching the redzone. “They learn from each instance,” said Maloof. The team still struggled a bit with an overmatched South Gwinnett team though and the Blue Devils worked during the off-week after the Comet game. “We spent it fixing what needed to be fixed then we started working on Mill Creek.” Assistant coach Corey Richardson said that the coaches worked on “trying to bring the team together.” “We had breakdowns, but this off-week we were able to regroup.” Richardson said he focused on technique with the defensive line and noted that the entire team is going to work and will get better every week. Maloof would go on to say that the Mill Creek game between two 2007 playoff teams would be won by the team that didn’t make mistakes.
This season the Blue Devils have much on the line. The team was tabbed by many to be in the hunt for a state title and they are expected to put past playoff trouble behind them. “The kids have worked hard and the community has really come on behind us,” said Maloof. “The kids realize more is at stake and there is more to be had.” Last season the Blue Devils were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round by Grayson, and that may have been the best thing for this year’s team. “We have something to build off of and these seniors have unfinished business.” Two of those seniors Prince Kent and DJ Adams are leaders of this team according to Maloof and they must be leaders. “The scholarships, that’s gravy what they’re doing, but their primary goal is to get the team into the playoffs. The young kids look up to them and to really all of the seniors.” Richardson noted that he is excited about the potential of this team and Maloof didn’t temper those thoughts. “Expectations are high and we expect to be there at the end.” This season started in the Georgia Dome and if the team hopes to end it there, the early season kinks will have to be worked out. With senior leadership, and if several key players stay injury-free, there is no reason to think Norcross won’t exceed expectations.

I see duh Ohio State is sandbagging it now

Word came out yesterday that duh Ohio State's Chris "Beanie" Wells will likely miss tomorrow's game with #1 USC. Tressell is pretty smart. He knows that WHEN his team loses, they will be knocked out of the BCSCG running....unless he can say at the end of the year, "Hey we won the Big Eleven (not hard to do this season), and when we lost to USC, we didn't have Beanie Wells, our best player! We deserve a rematch WITH our best guy!" Actually a pretty smart move so he can ONCE again go to the BCSCG, where he will get his ass handed to him ONCE AGAIN. But at least he can say he was there! Congrats Tress, you now coach the early 1990s Buffalo Bills!

With no FURTHER ADODO, on to the PICKS!
A special Friday night special.....#13 KU @ #19 SoFla. If Matt Groethe thought receiving death threats last week from people in Orlando was scary and he played so poorly the team had to go to OT against UCF, just imagine how much he will crap his pants when he sees KU's coach. That guy makes death treats by saying, "Boy you look tasty!" Seriously though KU wins this one. I'M THINKING ARBY'S!

On to Saturday, everyone's favorite day of the week!
#23 Cali @ Maryland. Speaking of FAT coaches, and I mean Fat, not with a PH, but with a stomach....Cali has to travel a ways, but they have a better QB situation than Maryland right know. I know, I know, "Crabcakes and Football, that's what Maryland does," but someone didn't give the Terps the message this season. The Fighting Sandy Cohens win.

Louisiana-Lafayette @ #24 Illinois. I heard that people in Georgia pronounce it Luh-fayette, NOT Lafayette, the way it is supposed to be pronounced. Hey, worked on Phonics DIDN'T work for Georgia. Seano, you are a teacher, please teach your kids the correct way. The Zookers win.

FAU @ Michigan State. This game is ACTUALLY ON ESPN2. So I guess Pam Ward's dance party is going to take place in Lansing Michigan this weekend. OK. Sparty wins.

NCState @ Klimpsen. The Wolf Pack play the Tigers. If this were a real fight, a Tiger would STOMP a wolf. I think reality matches reality in this game.

Iowa State @ Iowa. WOW. This intrastate rivalry could NOT BE more boring. Unless maybe Montana v Montana State was on the docket. Ummmm Iowa?

UAB @ Tennessee. Hey Vols, way to blow that game out in LA. Now we have to listen to a bunch of Pac-10 losers say that the P10 can TOTALLY HANG with the SEC. Well that is until next week! The Williamses win and fine tune up for Florida next week.

Nevada @ #6 Mizzou. This is a matchup between the Tigers and the WolfPack. See above. SAME RESULTS. Tigers win.

#14 ECU @ Tulane. I am AMAZED that this game is being played in New Orleans. I mean I thought those people used ANY EXCUSE POSSIBLE to leave the state and come live in Atlanta. Why isn't this game being played in the Georgia Dome? After ECU wins, I imagine the people of Nawlins will blame that too on Bush!

#16 Oregon @ Purdue. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2008-09 Sun Bowl preview! Purdue actually has a REALLY good QB in Painter and Oregon will wear a dizzying uniform to try and confuse Purdue's team. I think Purdon't wins this one at home, because the Pac-10 STINKS! Thanks again Tennessee!

#17 Penn State @ da Cuse. Joe Pa keeps up with Bobby Bowden with a big win over the Orangewomen. Wow, remember back in 1998 when Syracuse was relevant? Penn State wins and what the heck is a Nittnay Lion? In this game, a winner!

UCLA @ #18 BYU. UCLA will lose this one which makes Tennessee and in turn the SEC look bad. Thanks Tennessee! PS, the Cougars will then probably run the table and demand a BCS bowl bid. And the NCAA will cave, forgetting about Hawaii last season. THESE LITTLE SCHOOLS SUCK!

Michigan @ ND. The Fighting Fupas barely beat SDSU last week. Michigan is not good either, but both have the potential to be....wait, I have been drinking the NBC/ESPN Kool-aid. THIS GAME WILL BE TERRIBLE! Notre Dame at least will be at home though. Therefore advantage Fupas!

Chattavegas @ FSU. Flawrida state put up 69 points last weekend against WCU. I believe Chattavegas ALSO plays in the SoCon. Maybe they hold FSU to 65. Hey Booby Bowden, way to schedule a real meat grinder of an early schedule!

#9 Auburn @ Miss State. Auburn will have a headache after this game FROM all of the cowbells. And I think it's great that Auburn seems to have found their QB of the year in Chris Todd. I remember the last time Auburn picked a slow white guy QB over a more athletic QB. Brandon Cox is STILL waking up at night thinking of Tra Battle, Kelin Johnson and the rest of the UGA defense. yeah, this Todd guy was SOOOO good that out of high school he went to a JUCO. Yeah, what a talent he is. But he is still better than anything Miss State has. Tigers/Plainsmen/War Eagles win.

Western Kentucky @ #11 Bama. Wow, go 7-6, including a loss to UL-Monroe, then beat the HIGHLY overrated #9 team in the country, and NEED a special teams TD to beat Tulane and YOU TOO can climb to #11 in the polls! THIS is Alabama Football! They win over Western Kentucky and probably vault up to #6 in the country. They are the new Notre Dame!

SMU @ #12 Texas Tech. June Jones will tell his team to look at Texas Tech and soon they MIGHT become them in a year or two! If only SMU could still PAY players the rebuilding process might get jump started....TTU wins.

MTSU @ UK. This is for my cousin Matt, a HUGE UK fan. I will pick them to win. I HOPE THEY DO and don't pull a Missy State and lose to a crap crap crap school. UK has this one at home. Hopefully that is enough to get them a win. UGA will see you soon!

#3 duh Ohio State @ #1 USC. I already said that USC was going to win. They'd win WITH Beanie Wells lining up for the Buckeyes. I am just getting sick of them ALWAYS ending up in the BCSCG. It is getting a little crazy, isn't it? I mean, are THEY happy with always going and always getting beaten? Maybe this is part of the pact that Tressell made with Satan to get him his first title. Everyone KNOWS that one was tainted with MoClarret and the BOGUS P.I. flag. Now Tressell has to go EVERY YEAR and get stomped? Is he Bobby Cox?

North Texas @ #7 LSU. Way to really go out on a limb there defending champs! Good luck in the final tuneup before your real games begin. Let me ask you something though...does beating North Texas tell you anything out your Bayou Bengals there Les Miles? Oh well, you can't SPELL Les Miles without TWO Ls. Just saying..... LSU wins this one though.

UNLV @ #15 Az State. Did I read that correctly? Were fans in AZ State ACTUALLY SAYING Bring on Georgia? REALLY? That is like saying "BRING ON TAX TIME!" "BRING ON MONDAY!" "BRING ON A PRISON RAPE!" Why would you actually be calling out UGA like that? I don't get it. Az State, don't worry. Georgia will be there soon enough. You'd better pay attention to this game though. You'll win, but it might be close.

LOCK OF THE WEEK...
#3 OU @ U-Dub This isn't a lock of the week because Oklahoma is the #3 team in the country. No it's here because Ty Willingham is still coaching the Husky football team. And THAT'S why OU will win. As long as this game isn't held in the Fiesta Bowl, OU should win.

UPSET OF THE WEEK...
#10 Wisco @ #21 FrezNO State. I know it isn't much of an "upset" pick if EVERYONE is picking it, but looking at the rankings, it could qualify. Wisco ON THE ROAD against a FrezNO team that beat Rutgers at home, (but UNC made the FSU win not look as impressive now didn't they?) I still take the Bulldogs and with this win THEY TOO will try and say they deserve a BCS bowl bid. FINE, NCAA, create a fake BCS and call it the Wellfare Bowl and pit two midmajors against each other just so their crappy conferences can get a huge payday and a REAL team like Mizzou last season won't miss out on making a good game out of the regular BCS bowls. UGA/Mizzou last season would have been fun to watch.....

PRO-League action
Atlanta in Tampa Bay...A Rookie on the road v Monte Kiffin's defense. Advantage TB. A Lush QB taking snaps-Advantage Atlanta. Rookie head coach on the road-GAME TAMPA.

Local flava!
GT @ VaTech. Everyone around Atlanta is excited about how good GT looks. Well all 13 fans of GT are excited. Maybe it was just a GREAT tickle pile last weekend. I dunno. But I can't think that VaTech will lose this one. They just won't. Sorry GT. Wait, why am I sorry? And why am I suddenly rooting for VaTech? If the earth opened and swallowed both of these teams, I wouldn't be upset. Goyders win.

#2UGA @ SoCar...Will we FINALLY get to see Stephen Garcia? Well as long as he doesn't get arrested on the way to Williams-Brice Stadium. Which he might. It won't matter. The Defense couldn't stop Knowshon last season and he only carried it 14 times. Imagine when he totes it 25 times this year. This game has been circled on CMR and UGA's calendar ever since they were denied a BCSCG appearance last season. You KNOW CMR will want to win it and potentially put SOS out of his misery. But SoCar isn't that good anyways, I mean, didn't they lose to Vandy...twice? I wonder if SoCar officials regret not hiring Skip Holtz after Lou stepped down NOW? Ya think maybe? UGA wins by 17 points because CMR won't run up the score simply because he can. He'll save that for Florida....because he's classless, right Urban Meyer?

AND a quick PS about Spurrier

I know that everyone is wondering why he can't develop a QB at South Carolina after all of his success at Florida. I just want to quickly point out that while, YES he did turn Danny Awful into a Heisman winner en route to a national title, what other QBs did Spurrier spit out? Shane Matthews went on to a mediocre NFL career. Terry Dean? Doug Johnson-wow what a career with the Falcons. Jesse Palmer and Noah Brandise? Rex Grossman turned into a 1st round bust. I guess these guys had success on the college level.
Because UGA had Goff and Donnan as coach
Because LSU had DiNardo as coach
Because Auburn was on probation and had Terry Bowden as coach
Because Bama had DuBose as coach

Let's not kid ourselves. Spurrier was the man, but the SEC isn't as strong then in the 1990s as it is right now. Florida was nice and all, but FSU and Nebraska dominated that decade. If Spurrier had NEVER left Florida and was still Old Ball Coach in the swamp, I think UGA is STILL the dominant SEC East Program as Spurrier had started to lose the great athletes out of FLA before he left.

I just don't think we should give him all of this credit as a QB guru. Take away Wuerfeull (spelling) and he did NOTHING. Even with Danny, he had ONE! CMR, had two at FSU. He's made Greene into the NCAA's Winningest QB EVER. He took JD Stokley and won an SECCG in his ONLY season as starter. Now he has Matt Stafford. Talk about a QB Guru. Spurrier has more options because he COULDN'T develop them so he just threw about 6 against the wall each year and see which one stuck. THAT'S the one he went with. That isn't coaching. That's recruiting and taking advantage of Jim Donnan.

Season 3 recap of Pacey's Creek

I've ALREADY said that I am renaming the show Pacey's Creek. He is the better character. When he smiles, wow. Birds flutter, angels sing....ok, maybe I crossed the line, but he is just 10X the cooler character than Dawson.
I think the producers realized their goof and I think it is kind of funny that the character who the show is NAMED AFTER was in the background for most of the third season. He was just NOT a likeable character.

I think it speaks volumes about the actors themselves. Joshua Jackson has gone on to appear in several movies and is now in the new hot show Fringe (which I will be watching come Sunday night. I missed it the other day due to radio obligations. I also missed The Island last night on MTV. I hope it is coming on sometime this weekend. I love some MTV-as long as Russell Brand isn't involved.), while JVDB is NOWHERE to be found. Just saying.....

But when Dawson started crying during the season finale, I laughed. GOOD. YOU DESERVE IT! And when Joey dumped Pacey for Dawson's friendship, it made me root against her too. But now that she's back on a boat for the summer with Pacey, things are good.

Bottom line, I don't know why Joey would even want to consider Douchebag Dawson's friendship over Winning-man Whitter and his awesomeness is beyond me. Makes me question he judgment. Katie Holmes in real life marrying Tom Cruise doesn't do anything to calm my fears.......

Weekly ponderations on high school football

Why is Buford still a AA school? Just wondering. I debated this with IJ the other day on 790 The Zone. We BOTH think Buford could AT LEAST go up to AAA status. They just crush the AA competition and they are at it again. This time, they squashed previously ranked AAA North Hall. I say throw them in with all of the Hall County schools. They will probably still destroy those guys too, but come playoff time, maybe they wouldn't just roll thru to state title after state title. I know a win is a win, but they are pretty much like USC right now. Is it REALLY that satisfying winning a conference or classification every year when your competition is crappy?
Hey we are the tallest midget! Yippee! Move up OR before your region schedule begins, travel IN GEORGIA to play bigger schools instead of going to Ohio or Texas. Just saying. Play Carver-Columbus instead of Timberview Texas. You claim you are always the best...prove it.

That said, the ONLY school that can challenge Buford this season: Dublin. Yep. Sorry Charlton County, sorry Lovett. Dublin and Rashard Smith is IT! Even so, Buford will roll over them. MOVE UP ALREADY.

I can't WAIT for the state semis and finals in AAA with Cairo and Carver-Columbus. I would LOVE to witness that one. Cairo has so many weapons with Pease among others and Carver-Columbus as defending state champs have reloaded. They should be Zonetastic again come playoff time. My predix for the other final four in AAA: Flowery Branch with Conner Shaw and Dunwoody with Cooper and that running back.

In A, ECI survived an upset bid, but I can't see anyone really challenging them with TWO bonified D-1 prospects in Ealy and Moody. Won't be stopped by anyone this season.

I took in AAAA's Chamblee v North Springs and I say that Chamblee's backfield of Stormin' Warren Norman, Darius Jones and QB Garrett Williams is one of the most talented in ALL of GA State football (yeah, Camden. I think I give CHS the advantage.) Norman just puts his head down and is GOING to get 7 yards. you might stop him them, but not before 7 yards. Jones is a threat to do the distance EVERY time he touches it. And Garrett Williams just needs to trust his own skills more. I just don't think he knows how good he is. That said, I think Tucker beats them. With TCC down, and Chamblee having just moved up into the AAAA field, unless Westside-Macon is super-zonetastic, this is Tucker's year. Ware is down.

Finally AAAAA I cannot sing the praises of North Cobb enough here. I just shudder to think what they would have been last season if Emerson could have gone and Roark had been out at Wideout. The defense looked sharp with Lott busting heads and stopping a key "fake" field goal last week against MLKing. I think North Cobb made a statement and I think they win this weekend against Harrison and they SHOULD have been ranked this week. I would go so far as to say that NCHS is the best Cobb school out there. Yeah and I included Walton in that last statement.

Return of the Comets

Note: this story is actually from last week and refers to last Thursday. I forgot to post it up last week. My bad. It was the Score Atlanta Cover Story from last week.

Arquacious Crane was just fighting for an extra yard in a game last season for the South Gwinnett Comets JV football team. With just one hit, the South Gwinnett JV team’s season, and Crane’s career, ended. Crane suffered a spinal cord injury that would require two surgeries, but according to Comet head coach John Small, Crane is “rehabbing and progressing quite well,” and won’t require any more surgery. “He’s an amazing young man,” said Small of Crane. Small said that Crane, the 6’2 WR was a varsity player simply playing JV last season to get some reps, but that isn’t uncommon for South Gwinnett football. This year’s team, according to Small is a big group of sophomores with some juniors sprinkled in. This Thursday, the JV will take the field for the first time since last September 20, the night of the injury when the game was called with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Immediately after the injury, Crane was unable to walk and underwent surgery at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. His fellow Comet teammates and students set out to help Crane through several fundraisers. The Band of the Stars shared their Taste of South Gwinnett proceeds with Crane’s family and the South Gwinnett Touchdown Club set up a fund at several local banks. Students even passed around a bucket during the school’s lunch periods. His teammates and coaches all felt this was necessary and deserved. “He’s an amazing young man,” said Small.
Crane has returned to school and he will be at all of the Comet varsity games this season according to Small. “Everyday seeing him is an inspiration, not just on the field. He’s a great young man who never complains.” Ray Johnson, whose nephew played with Crane on the JV team last season, agrees. “He’s a great kid.”
Though he won’t be able to play, just Crane’s presence will be a boost for both the JV and the varsity teams. “Just seeing his face each and everyday is special for all of us,” says Small. “He reminds us how lucky we are.” The JV team has no plans to wear a special patch or decal honoring Crane, as Small said the varsity did that last season, en route to a 6-5 record and playoff appearance. The team had not made the playoffs since going posting a 12-1 record in 2003 and reaching the third round.
The JV game this week against Brookwood will be “just a normal game.” No special ceremonies are planned, just the business of playing football. The team has four games scheduled (Thursday vs. Brookwood, at Loganville, at Berkmar, home against Parkview) with three more October dates to be announced. Despite the injury, the Comets will still use the JV team to get some juniors repetitions they possibly would not get on the varsity field. Numerous players have been listed on both the varsity and the JV rosters, including Darius and Daunte Bryant, both DBs who should certainly see the most of the six quarters allowed per week by the GHSA. The JV Comets will likely be led by sophomore QB Josh Kelly, but junior Roie Felix could drop down from the varsity for some meaningful snaps. The JV team will have a stable of sophomore running backs with which to attack in Aaron Wimberly, Shane Madison and Darius Jones-Craven. A few of these youngsters though might be playing for time with the upperclassmen though as Comets varsity tailback Jeremy Dobbins (7 TDs in 2007) might be slowed this season with a knee injury. The Comets JV lost a huge crew of wide receivers to the varsity this season, but the pipeline has just reloaded with more sophomores such as Xavier Foreman, Adrian Ranson, and Kevin Gray, who should see plenty of time on Thursdays. The offensive line future for the Comets looks promising as eleven sophomores will cut their teeth this season. Defensive back, led by the Bryants and Chaz Jackson should be a strength for the JV, when they aren’t starring for the varsity Comets.
The JV team is anxious to get out and play, “if the weather will hold out,” according to Small, and the team will likely use Crane as an inspiration. “The kids are happy [Crane’s] back and he’s excited about getting back out [on the sidelines] with the guys,” said Small. In construction they say the job is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. This team is ready to live out the second part of the project.

Hey Urban, can Urban explain Urbanself please?

Fletcher Proctor has just one question for Urban Meyer. If Urban Meyer has such a problem with coaches and sportsmanship issues, why was Urban Meyer, with a 23-3 lead and 8 seconds left in the game against a clearly overmatched Miami team, kicking a field goal? Ummm Urban, why would Urban do that? Huh Urban?
Urban b!tched and moaned all off-season about Mark Richt's team celebrating and how classless it was, then Urban Meyer orders Urban's field goal kicker onto the field with 8 ticks remaining in a game Urban's team had in the bag (finally, since the team struggled for the first three quarters).
Was Urban upset that his #4 team in the country was struggling AT HOME to an unranked team, despite that team NOT being able to find the endzone AT ALL? Was Urban embarrassed that Urban's running game that Urban spent all off-season about hasn't done squat yet this season? Was Urban just trying to help out the betting public out there with a late cover? (PS, should the NCAA investigate whether Urban had money on the game?)
Fletcher Proctor just can't figure out why Urban Meyer would complain about Urban's opponents being classless then Urban himself turns classless with a late field goal to add insult to injury. Why would Urban kick a team while they are down? Fletcher Proctor wonders if Urban burns ants with a magnifying glass, just because Urban CAN.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Hey Urban, if Urban is going to talk the talk, Urban should walk the walk. Fletcher is just saying.

Do you remember Lizzie Shue

David Pollack joins The Zone

790 The Zone made a big announcement this morning about an addition to regular programming. I thought perhaps it was the big news of Fletcher Proctor being added to the Regular Sunday programming for NFL coverage, but it was in fact the news that former Georgia DE (and ex-Bengals LB) David Pollack would be joining the Afternoon Saloon on a regular basis.
The Zone recently let Hometeam Brandon Leak go and he is being replaced fulltime by Pollack. He will join Mike Bell and Chuck Da Kang Oliver M-F 4-7pm. On Saturdays he jets off to New York to work with CBS on the SEC postgame coverage. I am interested first of all to see if he sticks around assuming he has success with TV AND how he will fit in with The Saloon. We all know that DP leans a little more towards the religious side of things opposed to Bell and Oliver who sometimes can get a little dirty. Mike Bell is the wacky FM DJ stuck doing sports talk and while Pollack should be good through the end of football season, I wonder how he will do talking spring training and Hawks basketball?
He said this morning that he watches everything on TV, even pingpong if its on, but I just wonder. He did an OK job filling in with Mayhem, and don't get me wrong, I will like have the former Dawg at the station, I just wonder if he is going to like doing live remote broadcasts from bars or from The Cheetah. If he is going to like Mike Bell drinking right in front of him on the air. I hope it works out and I hope to be working with him at some point.

But back to me for a second. 790 has the general College Wrap up plus Pro lookahead show, then they have the Pro wrap up show, but DURING the Falcons games, we always had to go to satellite programming. NO LONGER. Every Sunday this season, THIS GUY will join IJ of Score Atlanta for the NFL Ticker. Every 10 minutes we will give you scores and updates on the games and in the meanwhile, we will be discussing the rest of the Pros, College and High school action from the weekend. Check it out this Sunday at 4pm!

Karma is coming back around Beantown....

I think the expressions "what goes around comes around" and "every good thing must come to an end" are about to become the mantra for Boston sports. Beantown has had a pretty good run in recent years with the Pats, the Sox and the Celts, even BC with Matty Ice last year, but I think that all came to an end yesterday.
"He was in a lot of pain. When you hear a scream, you know that." That was Kansas City safety Bernard Pollard about the hit on Patriot golden boy Tom Brady's left leg midway through the first quarter. Brady will miss the season with an ACL injury and the Pats hopes for yet another Super Bowl title will rest on the shoulders of Matt Cassell a career backup since high school. Or New England could go out and sign Chris Simms, who has done SO MUCH since high school himself.
Yep the Pats are screwed, just one game after losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl. They went 18-0, then LOST and now, even though they won yesterday, they lost Brady. A Phyrric victory if you ask me.

But I also think that the Celtics DON'T win it this year as I don't think Kevin McHale will gift wrap them another superstar in a terrible trade. Plus, I think unless they send McHale a ring for his part in last season's team, a plague will be placed on Boston's house!

As for the Red Sox, they traded away ManRam then tried to tell everyone that "OH NO, that was a GREAT MOVE!" yeah trading away one of the most feared hitters EVER in baseball is ALWAYS addition by subtraction. And considering you got Jason Bay back in exchange for a hall of famer PLUS several prospects...wow. Hey, you guys still trailing freaking TAMPA BAY in the standings? Just wondering. Yeah you still have a 900B payroll so you will make the playoffs, but I'm just not sure how you'll do with Josh Beckett going to visit Dr. James Andrews.....

Hey how did BC do against GT this past weekend?

Yep, I think the city of Boston peaked and is headed into the crapper. And it couldn't have happened to a nicer city. I just wonder if everyone jumping OFF the city's bandwagons will cause a huge traffic jam on the Mass Pike as they all leave.

But at least you'll still have Ben Affleck. Ouch, insult to Brady's injury.

Maybe it's time to stop Ben!?

Before I get to my thoughts on Ben Mauck and his never ending quest to get a 6th year of eligibility at Cincy, I wanted to LAUGH AT STEVE SPURRIER! This was a guy that in 2007 said that UGA wasn't anything special after they beat three ranked teams to end the year the lost to SoCar in the second game of the season because "didn't they lose to Vandy last season?" Ummm Steve, not sure if you realize this or not, but you've now lost to Vandy...twice in as many chances. Yep, you were 14-0 vs The Commowhores, but NOW you are 14-2. Might it be time to hang it up? Or might it be time to point out that POSSIBLY there is a NEW fourth best team in the SEC East? Not SoCar, Not UK, but VANDY! HA! Way to go Steve-O. Way to lose to Vandy on NATIONAL TV. At least last season when you lost to them AT HOME WHILE RANKED #6 In the country, no one outside of the south saw it. But NOW, EVERYONE SAW IT.
and with THAT, on to the PICKS!

Ohio @ #3 Duh Ohio State University. So Beanie Wells has been ruled out of this week's game because of the little toe injury (according to his mom) he suffered last week. I love how athletes miss games because of toes. I think that is funny. Turf Toe and a guy is out. Hurt toe, guy is out. Let's just put it this way: I don't think Jim Brown EVER missed a game with a hurt little toe. Just saying. Good thing Duh OSU is playing Ohio and not someone that could pose a challenge. And is someone driving Frank Solich to the game? The Herbies win walking away, except for Beanie Wells.

Marshall @ #11 Wisco. WE ARE....GOING TO LOSE! I am sure Matthew McConaghay (spelling) won't be in attendance to watch the Badgers burrow to another win, but you CAN BET THE RENT on his not wearing a shirt wherever he is during this game.

Eastern Illi @ #24 Illi. This is how much pull ESPN has with the voters in that Mizzou beat Illi pretty handily last week, but SOMEHOW SOMEWAY The Zookers are still ranked. HUH? I am thinking they move into the top 15 with a win. They are like Notre Dame these flipping guys!

Miami (OH) @ Michigan. I was SOOOO tempted to take the Red Hawks (is that still their name?), but then I read that Michigan reinstated a runningback from a suspension because RichRod felt he was punished enough. OR could it be your team's running game was turrbull last week? Big Blue wins...barely. Long year at the Big House

SoMiss @ #9 Aubie. So working against Awbarn: early start (see UGA game 2006), a NEW starting QB that was a juco last year, a tough young team with weapons. Positives for Awbarn: Chuck Oliver will be in attendance and I am guessing that after his return, come Sunday he will say, "Trey Blackmon, the best guy you've probably never heard of, at LB." He is FAMOUS for saying that phrase. Hey Chuck, I too read TSN and believe it or not, I HAVE heard of these people!. But Auburn wins, despite the curse of Hometeam.

Furman @ VaTech. The Fighting Joshes may have purple power, but they can't beat the Virginia Tech Future Criminals. This one will be as onesided as a rigged Michael Vick dogfight. Sorry Roomie and JCole. but please wear the finger!

Cincy @ #4 OU. OK, so the Sooners will win this game, but it WON'T be because Ben Mauck isn't there for Cincy. The guy is seeking a 6th year of eligibility because he got hurt back in 1868 and he thinks that he should get another year. The guy transfered from Wake after redshirting....who cares. HEY BEN, what are we trying to prove here? You aren't good enough to go to the NFL, go play in Canada or Europe or the AFL if you still want to play. CIncy is already playing its SECOND game. What if you DO get another year, are you going to enter this year and mess up the chemistry the team already has? And are we REALLY thinking that the NCAA, after already turning you down FIVE times, will suddenly reverse itself after you go to a higher court? Are you going to take this to the Supreme Court? I'd love to see that. "Hmmm let's see, overturning Roe V Wade or Ben Mauck getting a 6th year of eligibility at CINCINNATI? I say let's put stuff that really matters off to the side to listen to this a-hole." GO SOONERS And I hope Cincy loses every game this year. Sorry Larry

Oregon State @ #19 PSU. If Penn State was going TO Oregon State, I would have a chance to remember the Oregon Trail Game from elementary school, but alas this is the other trip. Although after OSU loses, maybe they will ford the river on the way home? Crud, your sister has died of Whooping cough!

San Diego State University @ Notre Dame. Gosh Fupa, are you THAT worried about losing 600 games like you did last season? The Aztecs? wow. But after Notre Dame wins, I am thinking next week they are #17. Just calling it now. DARN YOU CHARLIE THE HUTT!

Citadel @ Klimpsen. No way Thunder and Lightning get shut down against these guys, right? I DO wonder how many people will show up to this game and BOOOO Tommy Bowden and violate the moratorium I set for them of three seasons on not being able to complain about Baby Bowden. Remember people, you could have let him go, BUT you b!tched and moaned when he flirted with Arkie and resigned him. So you CAN'T yell at him for three years!

Richmond @ UVA. So UVA got SMOKED and ESPN Magazine said that RIchmond would upset the Cavs, so with all of that, I have to go with UVA in this game because the Spiders are without their coach from last year AND without the runningback Hightower. And while Groh must still go, I think the team gets inspired by the lack of negative signs in the crowd and crushes the Spiders.

#8 West Va @ ECU. I LOVE IT when a small team topples a bigger team then everyone starts sucking their lollipops and some people are even dumb enough to predict them to beat ANOTHER ranked team the following week. Listen up folks, WVA, as much as I hate them(that's right Poon's roommate, they are all inbreds!) they will beat the Pirates. Swashbuckle them even. Neers strum to a win.

WCU @ FSU. Hey Booby Bowden, way to take the first week of the season off so you can rest up for the Catamounts.....you will get this win but I wish it didn't count towards your win total all-time.

Tulane # #13 Bama. I feel so bad for Tulane with all of this hurricane stuff....wait, you mean they CHOSE to take a scholarship there RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A CITY BELOW SEALEVEL AND THEY WEREN'T SMART ENOUGH NOT TO GO BACK AFTER KATRINA? Hmmmm, I just hope that if Hurricane Hannah does hit GA, all of the residents go to Louisiana and STAY THERE FOREVER like the Lou-is-i-ana residents did here. You guys know you CAN Geaux home now right? The stuff is OVER. Tide ROLLS to a win (get it?)

#17 SoFla @ UCF. Apparently the Qb with the Groethe-Hawk that NO ONE HAS EVER HEARD OF has been trashtalking about UCF. (and btw, I was pulling a chuck there. EVERYONE has heard of Matty G from last season, but I wouldn't be surprised if Da Kang busted that one out)Isn't SoFla trashtalking UCF like Indiana trashtalking Minnesota in the Big11? SoFla wins, but NOT because of the trashtalking. You didn't get in their heads MattyG. Just saying.

Miami @ #5 Florida. Great, a three hour wetdream for all of the Florida fans out there. They will be so excited that they "broke the streak against Miami" but come on. You are playing a SHELL of the great Miami teams. Tebow will have 92 touchdowns adn Louis Murphy will be all proud that he called Florida the new U, even though the gators went 9-4 last season (really, one program is winning a bunch of championships these days? outside of 2006-07 I recall a bunch of losses with Urban at the helm. all I am saying. 42-30) Gators win this one but Fletcher Proctor predicts that Urban Meyer is still angry about the endzone celebration. Urban Meyer NEVER FORGETS!

Stanford @ #15 Arizona State. I would like for ASU to be undefeated and ranked as highly as possible when UGA lays that smack down upon thy candyass. And I STILL laugh that people think UGA will lose that game. I am getting the crow ready folks.

Lock of the week
#10 Texas @ UTEP. Why is everyone making a big deal about this game? So it will be the first time in FOREVER that the Horns have gone to El Paso. Who cares? Colt McCoy will lead this team to a HUGE win. I hope you enjoy it UTEP.

Upset of the week
Ole Miss @ #20 Wake. The key to this game will be a guy you've never heard of Jevan Snead of Ole Miss. You probably didn't know this but he started out at Texas, had to redshirt behind Colt McCoy and then left for Ole Miss and then he sat a year, but here he is. (sorry, channeling Chuck there.) Honestly though, Snead is pretty good. and I think Ole Miss has a tough enough defense that they upset Wake. They are good enough and Nutt is a darn good coach.

"Professional" games.
Detroit @ Atlanta. I read where the game is a sellout all of a sudden. But it ISN'T STUPID LADY ON DAVE FM. Enough tickets were sold that it won't be blacked out on local tv. THIS IS WHY UNQUALIFIED PEOPLE SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO BROACH A SUBJECT ON THE AIR! But really, you think Matty Ice and the dirty birds have a chance? Hmmm. Actually I do. Falcons beat the Lions. Wait, rookie QB starting? Nevermind. Lions win.

Local rooting interest
GT @ BC. an early game, but I have to think that GT has the advantage since BC is breaking in a new offense. I know BC has a pretty good LB led by Toal (probably the best LB you've never...SORRY), but Tech defense is better and this offense will give BC fits. 24-17 Tech wins.

CMU @ #2 UGA. I know this qb has better stats than Tebow, but COME ON. YOU PLAY AT CENTRAL MICHIGAN. STOP IT. Georgia cruises to the point that I probably start watching the Ole Miss upset of Wake by the third quarter. Honestly though, Stafford GETS his first 300 yard game RIGHT HERE (I think CMR keeps him in the game to get the mark.) Knowshon probably gets a lighter day but gets more yards (120 yards on 16 carries, 2TDs out by halftime) and the Dawgs win 42-20.

Where was THIS all season?

WHERE WAS THIS ALL SEASON?
The Atlanta Braves seemed to jump into the time machine and set the dial for 1992 last night in the team’s 2-0 win over Washington. Youngster James Parr made his major league debut and despite a fastball only registering at 86 mph, his breaking ball was dynamic, and he scattered two hits over six shutout innings. The bullpen then looked sharp as Jeff Bennett, Julian Tavarez and Mike Gonzalez each posted scoreless innings. Gonzalez struck out three straight to end the ballgame and pick up his ninth save of the year.
Kelly Johnson continued his hot streak and I have to ask, “Kelly, where was this?” Johnson is in serious danger of being moved this offseason, but over the last three games he has eight hits and is possibly giving GM Frank Wren second thoughts-or he is driving up his asking price.
But the Braves last night reminded me of the Braves just one year after the World Series. They had tasted success (which these Braves have in 2004) and it looked as though they wanted more. Chipper Jones had his typical good eye at the plate, Brian McCann is looking like a franchise player and potential hall of fame candidate. Finally, the younger players such as Brandon Jones and Josh Anderson and Gregor Blanco are making pitches to stick around next season.
Last night, even though attendance was low was actually fun to watch the Braves. A few more (OK MANY more) nights like this and Braves will get things turned around. And it all started with young quality pitching. Hmmmmmmm sounds like a blueprint that was worked before…

Hear me out NCAA!

I have the fix for college football. No it isn't a playoff. I LOVE the BCS. I wish more sports had a BCS (what other sport are you assured of a #1 v #2?).
If I were to change the NCAA, I would drop all of the schools NOT in BCS conferences into the FCS aka D-1AA. Think about it...ONLY have the 6 BCS conferences at NCAA 1-A level. What are we losing here? We get actual GOOD BCS bowls and bowl games, and the FCS suddenly gets a ton more teams for their little playoff.

The Bowls won't be Georgia Tech v Fresno State in a game NO ONE wants to see. It would be GT v Kansas in a game that people MIGHT ACTUALLY WATCH. I wouldn't mind seeing UVA taking on Oregon or maybe we could FINALLY settle which conference is the best if there are better chances of the SEC and Pac-10 actually meeting up. Instead of Texas Tech v Navy, we get Texas Tech v Rutgers.

And with all of those teams that no one really cares about playing in the GMAC bowl, Marshall v Bowling Green ACTUALLY MATTERS now as it is the first round of the FCS playoffs. (And with so many more people tuning in to the Division 1AA playoffs, maybe that would kick the BCS in the mouth to get a playoff of its own going.)

It all goes back to the baby conferences and really URBAN MEYER at Utah. The NCAA was tired of getting sued by this piss-ant conferences that should consider themselves lucky that the NCAA even recognizes them that they just let the MWC and WAC and MAC conferences take part in the BCS. Then Urban Meyer had to go and play a soft schedule, then beat arguably the WORST EVER CONFERENCE CHAMP in Pitt back in 2004-05 and now people take the "little guys seriously." And thank OU for losing to Boise State and perpetuating the notion. Thank goodness for UGA for smacking Hawaii around to show that the little guys don't deserve a seat at the big boy tables. All I am saying is that the bowls would be better (instead of one team disappointed they have to play Houston in the Mobile Bowl, and the little team READY TO SHOCK THE WORLD) and the playoffs would be better.

Just a modest proposal. GET IT DONE.

What a busy opening week of high school football

I know we had the Kell Powerade classic last week, but this past weekend was when EVERYONE ELSE opened up the 2008Georgia High School Football season. And what a weekend it was.

Ware County, a state finalist last season was preseason #1 entering the game, but got smacked down 24-0 and they will fall from the top spot. I don't think they every should have been there, personally. I thought and STILL think that Tucker was the top AAAA team, especially with the talented backfield they have (Drayton Calhoun-LSU bound and Jonathan Davis-OkieState bound). And you KNOW the defense will be stout YET AGAIN. They cruised and I am thinking another run to the final four is in store for these guys. Look at their competition: TCC barely won with a new coach, Bainbridge has TCC's old coach but how much talent, Chamblee has two great RBs, but a new coach, as does Cedar Shoals if I am not mistaken. Whitewater is incredibly talented by incredibly young according to my source down and Westside-Macon...we'll see how they hold up come playoff time. I just think Tucker is too talented to fall to any of these teams, and with NS-WR gone, the road to the AAAA championship runs through Tucker (well, the dome, but you get my point)

In AAAAA Lowndes adn NS-WR will be #1 and #2 with Camden probably sneaking in once the first two face each other, but they will meet again, in the dome. My cohorts on HSH5 say that Greg Reid is the best player in the state, I am not sure I can agree with that. He is a zonetastic player for Lowndes, but there are other players who are better and while Reid is oh so important to that team, I think they lose to NS-WR at home and then again in the playoffs. ML King at North Cobb will be a fun one to follow this week. I wonder if Rico Mack is going to see any time this season at QB. My source there said that he was expected to after last season, but hasn't so far in fall practice. I think Grayson is the best team in Gwinnett, especially after the first week of football. Parkview, yeouch. Norcross nearly lost again (too much for my darkhorse to win the state title in 5-A). I correctly called Walton in at ajc.com #8, for the record.

In AAA, I am not certain that I could have Cairo at #1 as the AJC does when they haven't played a game yet. Carver-Columbs is the defending champ and appear to be reloaded, but they are at #2. Paul Mac's Baldwin Braves come in at #3 now that they've dropped from 4A. Dunwoody is going to be a team to keep an eye on. Cooper Taylor and the little RB they have (Schley?) provide enough offense, but I worry about their defense. Apalachee scored on it a bunch last year and they will try to outscore everyone.

In AA, Buford took out a Texas team behind Cody Getz and Dallas Lee's blocking and tackling, but they NEED to get it together quick, especially with North Hall coming to town this week. Henry County with Jamal Patterson and Drew Little are the trendy sleeper pick, and I am jumping on the bandwagon. Look out for Henry, as well as Rashard Smith and Dublin. Dublin could give teams fits come playoff time. They won't WIN, but they will give them fits.

In single A, WAYSHAUN EALY is all you need to know.

Norcross has let me down thus far, even though they are 1-1. I think Camden exposed them. Even if they go 9-1 and make the final four, come playoff time, they will lose. Camden laid out the blueprint and that is IF Norcross can make it that far with the swiss cheese OLine they have.

Parkview lost to Collins Hill for the first time EVER. The Panthers just didn't read like they had the interior lines with it and the team needs the QB presence. Brandon Jacobs only had 82 yards? This team needs to step it up for their superstar. I think Grayson #1, Brookwood#2, Parkview#3 in that region...

How about Milton's running back Toney Williams (Tenn-bound) getting 7 tds and 350 yards. They needed it too as they only won 51-49. yeouch. Does Milton play defense?

And Roswell lost again. Wow, how the once-mighty have fallen. Maybe McFarlin knew what he had and THAT'S why he got out...

Apalachee, a team I did play by play for last season looked impressive in the school's first game at AAAA level. 35-15 with 4 tds for jr RB John Lee. I just hope he has gotten the east/west out of his system and does a little more north/south. He has the ability to be a great one next season. As for Chaun Gresham, hopefully he can play through the other team's scheming against him.

Lassiter has the talent to be better than 3-7, but we will see just how far Hoover's Chip Lindsey can take them.

ANd I STILL want to hear who you think is the best Big-time college bound RB in the state this season. Wayshaun Ealy (UGA) Toney Williams (UT) Brandon Jacobs (Aub), the Flowery Branch kid going to GT? Warren Norman (Vandy), Drayton Calhoun (LSU) Jonathan Davis (Okie State)

Paul Mac and I will be doing North Springs High School pxp this season, with the first game this Thursday (They actually won this past Saturday, but we were watching the Dawgs play) The team plays Chamblee and Stormin' Warren Norman. And of COURSE you can hear us Saturday mornings on 790 The Zone from 9-10 AM High School High Five.
