Paul Mac applauds Frank Wren.

What a turn of events in the last 24 hours for our Atlanta Braves. Moves days weeks months perhaps even years in the making have just come to pass on JUNE 3rd no less. The future of this ball club has come into much better view with both of these moves.

As much as this move annoys me as a fan and I find it distasteful to say the least…the right move has been made with Tom Glavine. The Braves essentially refuse to state publically that many of their moves are about money but subtly Frank Wren will admit it as he told a radio show this morning… “Of course everyone knows about the roster bonus and if we were to bring him up for nostalgic reasons that just wouldn’t make sense.” The Braves essentially have made a business decision and it’s the right one… my issue is… it was the right decision 4 months ago before he did all this rehabbing. If it’s about winning now… why not bring up Tommy Hanson and Medlin a month ago? Why did we even see Jo Jo Reyes? The answer yet again is the money. Specifically the super 2 money even though they stayed away from that too. They stand to save perhaps 5 million bucks if Tommy Hanson is everything they believe he is. Medlin and Jo Jo are being shopped of course.

The distastefulness of all of this being that they cast off both Smoltz and Glavine two sure fire hall of famers and two of the best players in club history in short order not to mention Glavine might as well be a talking duck saying Aflac because he was nothing more than an insurance policy this year in case Medlin or Hanson didn’t pan out. This happens, I get it.. it’s business, but the bulk of his 305 wins were with this team including a WS victory and he was sent off for a measly 1 million dollars which means the Braves again are quite tight with the money. In the long run Tommy Glavine wasn’t really in their plans long term and instead of giving him another couple weeks of rehab they just decided to be future oriented now. Frank Wren has not deviated from the plan it seems that was begun last fall in earnest and even though I hate this for Tom Glavine it is the right move for the team. People upset with the way this was handled or the way Smoltz was handled will be back when the Braves start winning in bulk again and the way it’s setup that could be as early as this fall, but probably next year because of the way Frank Wren has handled this team.

Releasing Glavine, calling up Hanson and sending down Schaffer would be Ok, so all that done the braves sit at .500 and 5.5 back with still a whopping talent gap in the outfield are they really going to have enough to get out of the 3rd spot in the East? The answer of course without modification is no but it’s June 3rd no moves usually get made for another month so this year is done right? Not so fast my friend. Being the trend setters we were on EVHEI show we’ve been following the better outfielders in baseball for the last several years with hopes the Braves might fill the gaping holes they have in the outfield sooner rather than later. Jason Bay was the biggest target, but they wanted Hanson for Bay so Bay ended up going to Boston and we saw how that played out. Xavier Nady was another excellent Pirate outfielder but he was snagged up by New York. The guy I personally never thought we had a chance at getting was Nate McClouth who is an All Star and one of the better young (Gold Glove last year) center fielders in baseball. The Braves have dealt their future potential stud CF in Gorkys Hernandez along with a decent potential 4th or 5th starter (not on this team) in Charlie Morton and up and coming lefty Jeff Locke from the Mississippi AA squad. This is tremendous for this year’s club and in the years to come as he is signed to a very reasonable deal 15 million over 3 years. It also likely in my mind spells the end of Jordan Schaffer’s tenure with the big league club unless he moves to left and he could be expendable should he find his hitting stroke. Perhaps he’s good enough to find us a future third baseman when Chipper is unable to perform to the same level.

All in all, I love the forward thinking from the Braves and Frank Wren. They are making sound financial decisions along with good sound club decisions it’s just as a fan it hurts my heart to cast out a guy who won a world series and cy young for you but as a GM you have to know when to let them go and youth is going to win out over age most of the time. If the stuff isn’t there, it’s not there and hopefully Hanson is lights out.

The new question of the year. What will they do in Left Field and how soon will they have to make the call on Francouer with Heyward waiting in the wings. That said, having two gold glove outfielders and a pretty nice Garrett Anderson and Matt Diaz platoon if all is well gives them a much better chance to compete this year especially with McClouth’s lead off ability, power, and speed on the base paths.

This was a spectacular move for Wren. He didn’t fleece the Pirates by any means, but he found an All Star Centerfielder who no one really dreamed was available, and he got an extra month and a half out of the deal doing it on June 3rd. Well done with this one FW.

Nate McClouth in, Tom Glavine out. Hanson up?

Today, June 3 marks a big day in the present and future of the Atlanta Braves. The first action of the day took place this afternoon when the Braves decided to release 300 game winner Tom Glavine. The lefty was attempting to come back from arm surgery and the team reportedly wanted him to make another rehab start, which Glavine seemingly wasn't willing to do. Glavine was released before being added to the roster which saves the team $1M immediately and an additional 1.5 after 31 days. This move and GM Frank Wren's comments (about the scouts not believing the rehab was going well, opposite of what Glavine was saying) also gives me the feeling that perhaps Wren didn't want Glavine to return this past off-season, but was perhaps outvoted, especially on the heels of losing Smoltz.

But now with the money saved from Glavine and since it is after the June 1 Super 2 Arbitration date, Tommy Hanson perhaps is just a week away from being called up to the show. Nothing will block the path now and Medlin can be moved to the bullpen or back to Gwinnett with some confidence after getting a win over the weekend.

Finally, the biggest news of the day is Nate McClouth being acquired from Pittsburgh. The Braves gave up Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke to get the 26 year old McClouth, who is under contract this season for 2.6 and the next three years at 5M per. This is bad news for Jordan Schafer, who is likely now trade bait...unless he gets back on track and McClouth is moved to left next season for Schafer to take over in center in 2010.
What will the future hold for Jeff Francoeur? He sticks until maybe 2010 or 2011 when Cody Johnson arrives to play left and Jason Heyward can play in right. When Frenchy turned down that contract in 2006 or 07 (sorry, can't remember) the team made Heyward its corner outfielder of the future and Cody Johnson can rake, as evidenced by his 18 HR this season.
As far as Schafer, if he doesn't turn it around, look for him to be moved. McClouth is good enough to stay in center for the next 8 years if the Braves can resign him. He would have been a perfect place holder for Gorkys Hernandez and you KNOW Wren tried to include Schafer in the deal, but his struggles likely kept him out of the deal.
To make an omelet, you have to break a few eggs. Gorkys in this case is the egg. I know what McClouth can do, not sure what Hernandez COULD DO. And if you think about it, Gorkys was part of the Renteria/Jurrjens deal, so Renteria got you Jurrjens AND McClouth. A good deal there, considering Jeff Locke would never have been more than likely a third starter AT BEST for Atlanta and Morton, who didn't hack it last season with Atlanta.
For Pittsburgh, GHernandez takes McClouth's spot in two seasons and Morton could be a 4th for them RIGHT now and a 2 in several years. Jeff Locke could be a #3 in two years for them. Really spare parts for Atlanta for a potential all-star and Pittsburgh gets good pieces it can build with.

As far as McClouth, he hit 26 HR last year with 94 RBI and a .276 average. This season he has 9HR and a .256 average. He will hit leadoff immediately. He might be the second best power hitter for Atlanta, behind Chipper, but his speed should put him right at the top of the lineup.
CF McClouth, SS Yunel, 3b Chipper, C McCann, LF Anderson 2b Kelly Johnson 1b Casey Kotchman (when healthy), Rf Frency
Wow when Frenchy, a potential 21 HR guy hits 8th. McClouth puts the Braves right back in this thing.

So with a rotation of Lowe, JJ, Vazquez (Who could be traded to restock the farm system), KK and Hanson, this team could really make a move. That is a lot to ask for with McClouth (who could be penciled in at 4, if you wanted to with KJ, YE, CJ, NM, BMac, GA, CK and Frenchy), but hey, time to step up bro. They traded away the future CF for you. BE WORTH IT!

Midweek entertainment report 6/3/09

Speidi gets out, Paris looks for a friend, the redhead is redhot, Conan debuts with a friend, Susan Boyle to the hospital, and Yahoo! give the real news.....

Ladies and gentlemen, the midweek entertainment report!

CLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAP!

Fourth time is the charm! Speidi finally left (after three aborted attempts) the jungle of "I'm a Celebrity, get me out of here!" All I can say is, I will now stop watching. As annoying as they were, they were the biggest stars on the show. They gave us such gems as Heidi's "I can't NOT have sex with you for three weeks!" as well as "Jesus was baptized." Thanks Heidi. They didn't leave though before Stephen Baldwin "baptized" Spencer in the river. And everyone was seemingly impressed with this.
Wait, is Stephen Baldwin an ordained minister? I did not realize. Oh he isn't? I guess I am the only one who realized this. No, that isn't true. Janice Dickinson also realized Spencer's dunking was a sham. Supermodel and supergenius!

Spencer also revealed the secret to his success and popularity: Prayer. He said he learned it from Heidi. According to Spence, everything she has truly wanted, she prayed for and received. So Spencer tried it out, praying for the ONE thing he really wanted: a double date with Miley Cyrus. Within a month, he got one. THAT IS SO STRANGE. I've prayed that the trailer trash idol would never go on a doubledate with myself and wifey because I don't want to be considered an accessory to statutory rape. She's 16. Her boyfriend is 20. ILLEGAL MUCH? Only in 39 states.

Moving on....
Paris Hilton began her search for her new BFF last night on MTV. Apparently Brittni had become a Hunger Tiger, so she needed a new friend. Oh course the token dude was there (Stephen) and apparently Zu came back, only she has a new name. We also have a fat chick who is "big and beautiful" according to herself. Really? Well in the first show we get to see her do a strip tease...twice. AWESOME. That is what I want to watch. Fat chicks stripping!
Speaking of stripping, part of the first challenge was Paris had the girls and guy (no, I was right the first time. the girls) go a pole dance down to their bathing suits. As Tinicia said though, "What girl hasn't dreamed of being on a pole?" Wifey immediatedly raised her hand.
The pole dancing though led to a bit of drama. One of the girls wasn't being classy enough to another one of the potential BFFs (sorry, I don't know their names yet.) "I was dancing on my pole with class. I wasn't showing my ass!" was a direct quote.
But the REAL drama came when the token "dude" Stephen started crying, saying he was afraid of the pole. Paris told him he didn't have to take his clothes off, just dance on the pole in front of the sea of men. But Stephen then let slip that he didn't have a problem with taking his clothes off, he was literally afraid of the pole. Maybe he was allergic? Paris wondered if Stevie was a drama queen and maybe he just "craves attention." REALLY? So this guy is Onch part two? Great!
Can't wait for next week!

The redhead chick from Mental has a name...Jacqueline McKenzie. WOW. she got even hotter last night. Plus she has a bit of a naughty side, the fling with the doctor...makes her even hotter. Not just the low cut top and tight trousers. Once again, can't wait for next week. As far as the show, enh, but she makes it worth watching. Jacky McKenzie. Get this chick her own show! Add her to House! You could cut Talb out. Have her along with 13, Olivia Wilde. Or she could transition her character over. She could work hand-in-hand with House. I like this idea.

Conan has moved over to LA and the Tonight Show. I see where Andy Richter has signed on to be his sidekick/announcer guy again. I am amazed Andy was available. Doesn't Fox want to give him a fourth sitcom pilot that doesn't get picked up? I guess they just gave his to Norm McDonald or John Goodman again. SWEET!

According to her brother Britain's Got Talent runnerup, and recent meanie, Susan Boyle has checked into a hospital for exhaustion, which is a medical term for expired 15 minutes of fame.

Finally, BREAKING NEWS FROM YAHOO!.com On the front page of its home page, Yahoo! has reported that the oldest Australian man has died. Thanks Yahoo! Almost as newswothy as Obama going to 5 guys burger and fries (thank you front page of ajc.com) Has the world REALLY run out of news?

Thanks everybody. Enjoy the rest of your week! And Cubs fans, you guys got quiet after the 8th inning of last night's game at the Ted. I hope that means you guys are just bandwagon jumpers. That bullpen blows! Try not to twist an ankle jumping off that bandwagon. And go back to work! Or is Chicago like Mexico and they take a 3 hour break in the middle of the day?

Why no tracking device?

Let's get serious here for a second on Sportsbyfletch. In regards to the Air France plane that went missing en route from Brazil to France(?), how can that happen?

I thought planes had a black box on board? Are you telling me that those things aren't also able to be tracked? Commercial airlines don't put a lowjack-type device in there?

I am not trying to be a smart ass, I am just wondering.

After Castaway and Lost, if I was getting on a plane that was set to go over nothing but water, I'd want my plane to be able to be tracked. Because honestly, I could not survive like Tom Hanks did in Castaway. And, though I've never watched Lost (I guess I'm not smart enough), I think I would be captured by those "other people" or whatever they are called within 8 minutes.

It is just very surprising that planes cannot be tracked like that. If my car with a lowjack can be traced and tracked if ever "lost," they why couldn't a flipping plane have the same thing?

Great mysteries of life, I guess. Kind of like why the opening of a can of tennis balls sounds so neat. And how pirates continue to exist.

Liberal use of the word celebrity

I caught the first episode of "I'm a Celebrity...get me out of here!" last night, and I must say that NBC is REALLY being kind by considering some of these people celebrities.
Stephen Baldwin, well of course. He does EVERY "Celeb" game. Lou Diamond Phillips, I'll give you. Same with the Janice Dickinson woman.

And of course, SPEIDI. They are the biggest celebs on the show and Lou Diamond Phillips need to hide his jealousy a little better. Stephen Baldwin was right to credit Spencer for capitalizing and living in the moment, because in 5 years I doubt we'll still blog about them. But right now, they are HOT. A great get for NBC.

But the rest of the "celebs"? John Sally? What, did Best Damn Sports Show not renew the contract on Fox Sports? Sanjaya being called a "pop star" is funny too. Torrie Wilson is no Stacy Keibler. And Rob Blagovich's [sic] wife? Really? And who is Frangela? The comedy duo? Don't you have to be funny to be a comedian? I thought so.

In fact, the best part of the show was when Spencer slapped the waterbottle out of one of Frangela's hands and she started yelling at Spencer. He said "Do you know who you are talking to?" and she responded, "Do you know who YOU are talking to?"

If I had been Spencer I would have said, "Actually I DON'T know who you are. Sorry, could you please intro yourself?"

Great get for NBC though to grab Spencer and Heidi. NBC needs anything it can get right now. I am wondering though why Dustin Diamond wasn't invited instead of Frangela? Oh, I guess because he would have tried to keep the money for himself instead of giving it to charity. But really, Christian Slater wasn't available? You cancelled his show, but he is probably still under contract. Howie Mandel? You could have made Jimmy Fallon do it to promote his Late Nite Show. Or even Carson Daly to do the Late Shift or whatever it is called. Tim Meadows isn't working. Molly Shannon or Cheri O'Teri? Or that Kel kid from Kennan and Kel.

I am not certain how much longer I will watch this show though. With House on tonight (even though it IS a rerun) and Mental on (with that hot redhead-did you SEE at pencil skirt and maryjane combo she wore last week?) and the premire of Paris Hilton's New BFF, I don't think I have time for Speidi eating banana slugs.

Well, NBC, it was a good try. Need more star power though other than Speidi.

Paul Mac Sticks up for Williams Sistahs

After Fletcher's Twitter called Serena and Venus out last week, basically saying how those two have ZERO right to EVER complain about their place in women's tennis due to THEIR self-imposed vacations from the sport to pursue fashion, acting and art, Sleazy P Paul Mac thought he would fire back in defense of the two most dominant tennis players ever.

For whatever reason, Paul Mac had a problem with my statement of "I would consider both of them two of the biggest wastes of talent EVER. Are you flipping kidding me though? They should have shattered Steffi Graf's records. But they got bored with tennis and only NOW seem to be interested again, now that they are "over the hill" in tennis terms. too bad."

Sez Paul Mac...Consider if you will the amount of absolute will and focus it takes to get to the level they had attained in tennis. You give up vast parts of your life to achieve that level. Then when you have a ton of money... hard for me to take shots at people who have been so focused in their lives to get to that level achieve that level of success and then not take some time to enjoy it or work on other interests for a while. You only get one life after all.

A busy night of Sunday television

Good thing Flenda's has three TVs in it because between No Country for Old Men, The Hills finale and the MTV Movie Awards, THIS GUY was a busy man.

Let me start off by saying that No Country for Old Men....what just happened? It was as though the Cohen Brothers were writing a (boring) movie and then reach the 2 hour mark and decided "Oh crap, we just hit 2 hours. Let's end the movie!" However, instead of wrapping up the movie, they just went to black ala Sopranos. Very strange....

As far as the Twilight Award, errrrrrr I mean the MTV movie awards, I am a little tired of just giving Jim Carrey an award because he was in a movie. But he won the award for Liar Liar 10 years ago and this was the same movie, so why not give him the award again? And could we tell Eminem that maybe his scene last night is the reason he hasn't gotten another role other than 8 Mile. DUDE, your acting was terrible. We all knew it was a setup and you still couldn't pull it off.

But now to the real story of last night. LC leaves the Hills. I wonder if LC has learned anything from Mischa Barton who wanted to leave the OC to pursue other stuff only to find that nothing was out there. The OC quickly folded without her even though I think it was only because they story lines played themselves out after the midpoint of season three. With LC, they will replace her with Kristen Cavallari and the show will hardly miss a beat. Kind of like when Diane left Cheers and the show just moved on to Kirsty Alley. Not sure this was the best career move for LC, but the show will benefit from it because she had clearly grown tired of it and the writers were even writing her out of most of the story lines. (wait, I thought this was reality...)
But the drama last night was with the naming of the maid of honor. Heidi gave it to her sister (duh) but for some reason She-Pratt couldn't believe this. REALLY? You thought you would get it over her FREAKING SISTER? Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrright. And it was also funny when She-pratt was angry with Holly for arriving late at the bridal shower. Ummm maybe she has a real job and doesn't just work for MTV? Possibly? Maybe not. I cannot confirm that.
But what I do know is that Holly shouldn't have been throwing food. Spencer had EVERY right to yell at her. Again, I know the script called for it, but Holly should have questioned the writers. They could have come up with a better way for her to ruin the rehearsal dinner. The speech she gave was on the right track. Maybe she could have talked about a former boyfriend or something. That would have been better.

Lastly, I hope Sleazy T gets more airtime next season. He made his debut on Brody's show and he has been making cameos this season on The Hills. Let's hook him up with Kristen please. Get him some airtime! Sleazy T!

So to summarize....No Country for Old Men-WHAT? Andy Samberg-not funny. Eminem-not a good acting job. Twilight-big with the tweeners. Holly-grow up. LC-bad career move. Future of the Hills-in good hands with Kristen.
Can't wait for "Im a 'celebrity'...get me out of here!" tonight and Paris Hilton's BFF tomorrow. Yee-haw! Who says Summer TV is bad?
