As the Deep South’s oldest rivalry gets ready for the 2010 chapter, Georgia must relish the fact that it is Auburn in the news for all of the wrong reasons heading into Saturday’s tilt. I know I am thinking it is about friggin' time SOME ONE ELSE gets a taste. Despite the fact that all season long Georgia fans have been calling for Mike Bobo’s head (perhaps we have been on SA-Scoreboard show) or wondering if Mark Richt could survive the 1-4 start or stewing over the AJ Green suspension or moaning over the apparent-lack of a running game or trying to brush Grantham’s choke sign under a rug (seriously it wasn't THAT big of a deal), it is NOT Georgia receiving negative publicity entering the SEC cross-over game.
Auburn has been dealing with the intense media spotlight all week as issue after issue involving Cam Newton has come to the forefront. Was he paid? Did he know some one asked Mississippi State about $200,000? Where did all of the money for Newton’s father’s church come from? Did Newton cheat at Florida? Will these allegations affect the Heisman voting? You know that Auburn is No. 2 in the country and thinking about a national title, but certainly this negative news has to be taking a bit of the focus away from the gameplan for Georgia. Hopefully?
And here is the magic bullet: Georgia has underachieved all season long but clearly has the talent to give Auburn a run this weekend. The Bulldogs have in fact beaten Auburn the last four years and that streak started in 2006 with a freshman QB visiting the Plains and walking out with a win against a team ranked in the top five. If you don’t think Georgia has the players that can stand up to Auburn, you are crazy. Auburn has some fine receivers, but the Tigers don’t have an AJ Green. Orson Charles will also be a match up nightmare for Auburn. You like Auburn’s defensive front? I like Justin Houston who is leading the SEC in sacks. Oh and the Georgia secondary is starting to come together after Alec Ogletree was made into a starter. (Let's just make sure Vance Cuff and Sanders Commings go with Loren Smith to a different stadium)
If AJ Green can keep his mouth shut (stop giving the Tiger bulletin board material please) and Georgia keeps letting Auburn take all of the media bullets, then perhaps the Tigers might be wary enough to fall come Saturday afternoon. Georgia had better hope so because that Cam Newton has been slicing people up all season long.
