It's SIGNING DAY!

Note: this was my column from last year's signing day. Enjoy this blast from the past!
OK, yeah. I get excited for signing day.

But to think that I am the weird one that gets just a little too pumped in regards to the future of 17 year old boys is JUST NOT TRUE.

No. People are MUCH weirder than I.

Look at the AJC .com page to see that people actually took work off today to drive to Athens to wait for faxes to come across saying these high schoolers will sign with UGA. The fool that paints his head was in Athens today with....his head painted. Huh? I fiugred I was weird by just refreshing the ajc.com page about 30 times a minute.

Now there are people whose JOB recruiting is....the rivals.com, scout.com, espn.com people and hey, OBVIOUSLY there is a market for this. But I think we maybe put TOO much stock into this.

UGA will not have a top 10 class according to 1, not a top 25 according to another, but the #7 in another. Kind of an inexact science if you ask me.

And furthermore, How can we REALLY tell how good these kids will be in 4 years. Shoot most won't really play much for two more years, after a redshirt and a backup freshman year.

Take Georgia's class. For the last two years UGA had top 5 classes. What makes a class sexy like that????? QBs, RBs, and WRs. Look at Florida this season. That is mostly what the class is and they will "win" the recruiting wars. But how is their D going to look next year? UGA needed help on the O and D lines. They got it. But their class isn't as sexy as South Carolina's because they didn't go after the QB, RB and WR and CBs that would have given them a top 5 ranking.

Georgia filled needs. That should be taken into account when these rankings come out.

As for this year and next year, UGA's last two recruiting classes will finally get some huge playing time and I am thinking 2008 National Championship because Stafford will be a JR then with the other guys having been given experiece, especially all these linemen they signed today. I hope Florida enjoys having the best RBs and QBs(they signed 4!?!?!?! when they have Tebow?!?!?!) and WR. Last time I checked, 1 ball and you need a good line. And a defense. And you lost 7, maybe 8 starters from your D. Good luck stopping Stafford.

Next year I think UGA will have another top 5 class as they CAN go for skill positions. This year the target was O-line and they got it.

But really, this whole business is hit or miss. Thomas Davis wasn't a 5-star guy. David Greene and Pollack weren't either. Albert Hollis was supposed to be the man. Jasper Sanks was at one time a 4 star stud.

I trust in 124 Hall of Famer Mark Richt. He is the cook. He has the ingredients. NOW MAKE ME A PIE!

(It should be noted, UGA is scheduled to have 2008's number 3 or 4 class, depending on where you look. UGA is also a preseason top 5 pick too. Speaking on inexact science... But why is UGA #3 or 4, after being #1 in the weeks leading up? Because Scout and Rivals wants drama on the last day, so these athletes' STARS drop or rise to add intrigue. UGA got two REALLY great WR, three fantastic RBs, some strong OL and DL, a fabulous kicker and they lost a TE to Clemson. Oh well, The Dawgs still have BRUCE Figgons. All that matters!)
