Coffee makes playoffs despite loss of QB

Not many programs can afford to lose the state’s top quarterback prospect and still make the playoffs but Coffee has done just that this year. Will Gardner was lost for the season in the Trojans first game this season with a ruptured ACL, forcing Coffee to turn to Santory Long under center. Long helped Coffee make the playoffs and even pull off an upset of Valdosta. Gardner has committed to Louisville and the AJC reports that the Cardinals will still honor the scholarship offer. ...

When you look at all of Lovejoy’s boxscores, you will see that the defense is plenty stout with four straight shutouts and seven for the year, but Travis Custis deserves your attention as well. The junior running back toted the rock 31 times last week, churning up 269 yards and three scores in the 24-0 win over Creekside. Custis ran for four scores a few weeks back in the Georgia Dome. ...

East Paulding couldn’t stay down long as the Raiders bounced back from its first loss of the year at home to Pope with a 35-7 victory over Osborne. Kamani Thomas ran for 234 yards and four scores while Andrej Suttles recorded two touchdowns in the win. ...

Donnie Miles has been slowed by a balky ankle all season but you never would have known it Friday when the junior back helped North Gwinnett trounce Duluth 44-14. Miles ran for two scores and 96 yards on just eight carries. Joe Jones also had two touchdowns for the Bulldogs, who face Peachtree Ridge this Friday on GPB TV. ...

ELCA junior star Keyante Green was held out of Friday’s tilt with Southwest Atlanta Christian due to a muscle strain, but ELCA’s offense hardly skipped a beat. John Tatum rushed for over 200 yards with three scores on just 13 carries.
