With Isaiah Crowell and three other running backs out for Saturday’s game with New Mexico State Brandon Harton is likely to get the start at tailback for Mark Richt and the Georgia Bulldogs. Folks shouldn’t be too surprised though if true freshman Kyle Karempelis gets plenty of snaps Saturday. The Wesleyan School (GA) product had offers to go to smaller programs but decided instead to attend Georgia as a preferred walk-on. While he hasn’t gotten any game action just yet, when he does this Saturday his track record shows he can tote the rock.
Karempelis played in Georgia’s smallest classification but was still a four-year letterman, tallying 5756 yards and 93 touchdowns over his career. He was an All-State selection three times in high school and he out-played Washaun Ealey in the 2008 state championship game as a sophomore. Karempelis rushed for three socres and 135 yards while hauling in 46 receiving yards. Last year in the playoffs Karempelis faced Nick Marshall and Wilcox County, the defending Class A champions and the back carried 42 times for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns.
Karempelis seems to shine the brightest when the game ratchets up and you cannot ratchet it up much more than SEC football.
