Do you absolutely hate the BCS? Do you wish with all of your being that college football (well, the FBS-subdivision of Division I) had a playoff system? Can you not stand that computers decide the champion instead of the teams playing it out on the field? If so, you should be rooting for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Just days, heck just minutes, after Alabama lost to LSU, people were already wondering if Alabama could meet back up with the Tigers in the BCS national championship game. Well if Stanford loses to Oregon this week and if Oklahoma State loses in December to Oklahoma then the field would be opened right up for Alabama to play LSU again, certainly over Boise State! Alabama didn’t win its own conference and didn’t play for a conference title? So what?! They are the second-best team in the country! LET THEM PLAY!
But if you HATE the BCS and fell asleep during the 9-6 defensive “slugfest,” and the chance that the computers could put an Alabama/LSU rematch on the table makes you want to slit your wrists, the answer is simple: root for Georgia.
Think about it: the BCS will already catch so much grief for putting Alabama in the game over an unbeaten Boise State despite the Tide not winning its own division, much less conference. What if LSU failed to win its conference game? Alabama wouldn’t be able to play for the title, nor would LSU likely if undefeated Boise State is right there and an undefeated Stanford is there too. First off, Bama wouldn’t be BCS-eligible if Georgia snags one of the spots, and it is doubtful that LSU gets into the title game if it has just lost and Stanford has just won a Pac-12 championship game or Oklahoma has just beaten Okie State in a de facto title game.
With no SEC team in the championship game, the SEC gets angry at the BCS and decides to pull out because the two best teams in the country aren’t playing for it all. And whichever the SEC, the nation’s best football conference, goes, so goes the rest of the college football world. You want a playoff? You’d get the SEC pushing for one as its string of BCS titles comes to an end. If you hate the BCS and you want a playoff, root hard for Georgia. The Dawgs could just be the team that finally kills the BCS.
