Kell Powerade Classic to show off some of Georgia’s best talent

This Saturday when the Kell Powerade Classic kicks off the 2008 season at the Georgia Dome, a few of Georgia’s finest football players will be on display. Kicking off the kickoff classic will be Starrs Mill and their standout kicker Chirs Ward taking on Etowah. Ward has already committed to Tom O’Brien and NC State and Stephen Roberts has Ole Miss thirsting for the chance at this linebacker extraordinaire. Also, keep an eye on runningback Dan Ellis, a player Coach Mike Earwood says will be “one of the guys [they] can count on.”
In the second game, the Brookwood Broncos will face off against 2007 State semi-finalist Walton. Walton has senior Ray Rayburn returning to the quarterback position, but this should be his first season as full-time starter. He will be joined by David Paulsen DE/LB hybrid that can play offense and who has several offers on the table already entering his senior season. Brookwood lost a bunch of talent from last season, but the Offensive line, always a Bronco strength, will be anchored by Crimson Tide-bound Kellen Williams. He won’t have last year’s top rusher Kenny Miles to open holes for or last year’s QB Terence Davis making plays, but he should help establish a new running threat. On defense the Broncos are set at the linebacker position with Chris Martin and David Cooper and shouldn’t allow many points this season.
In the premier game of the classic, Norcross and its 22-3 record over the last two seasons takes on Camden, a state semi-finalist last year. Camden will be breaking in a new quarterback, but Christian Milstead has seen action under center before. Greg Baker and Maruqevious Myers join him in the backfield of this potent Wing-T attack. Norcross meanwhile will be run this season by Charles King, a dangerous runner and thrower and he will be tossing to Matt Autry and Prince Kent. The latter is also a standout on the defensive side of the ball and is committed to Miami. But any conversation involving the Blue Devils must begin and end with running back DJ Adams. The future Maryland Terp rushed for 1,400 yards last season while sharing the field with Brice Butler and DeVonta Bolton, but now it is the “Adams Show,” and he could grab 2000 all-purpose yards.
In the final game of the Classic, McEachern will debut its new Pistol offense, installed by new coach Kyle Hockman against the Rams of Grayson. The Rams have QB Tyler Horne and RB Ean Pemberton back and should again make the playoffs after going 10-3 last season with a trip to the third round of the playoffs. The Indians will be coming off the school’s first losing record in seemingly forever. Hockman comes to McEachern from Campbell and will utilize TE Terrell Mitchell in his new offense, a break from former coach Jimmy Dorsey’s Wing T.
So head down to the Georgia Dome this Saturday morning starting at 11:30 or just tune in to Sports Radio 790 The Zone and catch the action. Football is here and one week earlier than normal. Time to rejoice!

PS, this was also slated to be this week's 790 the zone article, but sometimes they don't post them in time.....
