Urban Meyer’s expected leave of absence isn’t really affecting the Florida Gator recruiting class as many SEC fans were hoping. When Meyer came out with his “retirement” on Boxing Day (that’s the day after Christmas for everyone that isn’t Canadian) and then takeback the next day, many people were thinking that the indecision might lead to a few recruits flipping or backing out on the Gators. Throw in the fact that Charlie Strong left for Louisville and the Gators figured to fall down the recruiting class rankings.
Not so fast my friend, as Lee Corso of ESPN would say. This past Saturday the Florida Gators picked up three commitments during the US Army High School all-star game. The Gators re-nabbed DB Matt Elam, who had switched from the Gators to FSU, but TSN’s No.4 overall player re-pledged during the game. Add those three to the players that committed during the Under Armor game and suddenly Florida looks like it might already have the No.1 recruiting class, if everyone stays aboard. ESPN.com has even gone so far as to say that the Gators class might be one of the best recruiting hauls ever. According to ESPN.com’s Gerry Hamilton, the Gators are still in the mix for ESPNU’s Top 150 No.1 and No.2, having already secured 15 of the top 150.
Speaking of the Gators, Urban Meyer may not miss the 2010 season as was expected with his leave of absence. According to Florida-commit Mack Brown of ML King, Meyer will return in August before the season kicks off for Florida. Brown was recently interviewed by Score Atlanta’s Official Visit on 790 The Zone, as well as the AJC where he made the revelation known to the world. Brown said he spoke of the situation with Meyer but was committed to Florida the whole time.
Next year Florida will try and use these talented freshmen to dethrone the defending BCS champion Alabama Crimson Tide. As 680 The Fan’s Buck Belue would say, “Alabama is Alabama and Alabama is No.1,” after the Tide knocked out Texas in the BCS championship game. I was a bit taken back by some of the local media however as several members seemed to discount what Alabama did because Colt McCoy was knocked from the game just five plays into the first drive. On 680’s Rude Awakening, Perry said that the fans were robbed of the game since the Tide defense rocked McCoy and forced him to miss most of the game. Several other radio hosts thought that Texas would have won if McCoy had not been injured. I must agree with ESPN’s Colin Cowherd though and say that Alabama won the game and kudos to them. They were physical and knocked McCoy around enough to force him from the contest. Sorry you got hurt Colt, but that is football. Those are the breaks of the game. He couldn’t stand Bama’s physical play and don’t you think maybe Alabama came into the game wanting to be physical with the QB. Texas didn’t have a running game as the entire offense ran through McCoy. You don’t think the game wasn’t “hit McCoy until he doesn’t want to get up?” I am not saying that the Tide was trying to hurt McCoy and knock him out of the game, but you KNOW they wanted to hit him repeatedly. Cowherd noted that McCoy didn’t do well against physical defenses such as Nebraska and Oklahoma. Nick Saban and Kirby Smart are intelligent individuals. I’m sure they watched film and saw that when making up a gameplan. But to say that everyone was robbed when McCoy was injured is just crazy. His line didn’t do their jobs and Alabama’s defense executed the plan to knock him around. It just happened early enough that McCoy was donezo for the contest.
