A lot of talent is Class A

Camden County participated in the Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic Monday and received three first-half scores from Allen Hopkins in a 23-14 win over Cleveland Glenville. Keith Pecko nailed a 45-yard field goal in the win...

The big schools get a lot of attention in the recruiting world and the 5A powers certainly dominate the prep beats in most media outlets. However elite talent certainly exists in the smaller classifications, and this year Class A has some of its best ever. Jenkins County’s James DeLoach and Jonathan Taylor are both headed to the University of Georgia next season to play on the defensive side of the ball. Both are also starring this year for the Jenkins County War Ealges. Kyle Sloter is perhaps the best senior quarterback in the state that you aren’t paying attention to in 2011. Sloter is Mount Pisgah’s signal-caller and is getting serious looks from Tulane and Illinois and he is off to a strong start. In Mount Pisgah’s first game, the 6’5 Sloter was 11-12 for 308 yards and four TDs while playing just the first half. Last Friday Sloter passed for 224 yards and one score while running for 117 yards and a 43-yard touchdown. Sloter is one to keep an eye on this year...

The debate amongst Walton fans rages on as to who is the better Blaylock brother. Zack hauled in a 50-yard touchdown in Walton’s thumping of Milton while Daron returned an interception 38 yards for a score...

In cross country news, Allatoona swept the boys and girls Class 1A-3A team titles at the Berry Invitational over the weekend. Emily Dunn paced the Allatoona girls, finishing sixth while Corbin Williams (eighth place finish) was one of four Buccaneer boys to finish in the top twenty...The Harrison girls won the 4A-5A title at the event, held at Berry College. Kaylee Isaacs was the top Lady Hoya, finishing in eighth place. The Hoyas had two other racers finish in the top 19.
