Bobby Knight to UGA?

I must admit, I nearly choked on my Jell-O pudding when I read Furman Bisher's column this morning that Bobby Knight would be interested in coming to UGA as the next coach of the Georgia Men's basketball team. Now we all know that Furman is quite connected and wouldn't write something like this unless it is absolutely true. But apparently Knight said that, if offered, he would accept the position. I don't really know how I feel about this. On one hand, you are talking about the winningest coach in NCAA history. He would bring INSTANT credibility to the UGA men's program. The Dawgs would be on ESPN several times a season and in the tourney within two years likely. I would also imagine that the boosters might just spring for a new Arena or Coliseum for Bobby Knight.
On the other hand though, Knight likely won't stick around longer than 5 seasons max. An Anthony Grant will likely stick around for 15-20 seasons and perhaps turn UGA into a perennial power that Knight might not last long enough to do. Knight will also bring a little baggage with him and he wasn't exactly bringing in the talent to Lubbuck, Texas. Plus Knight might be another Michael Adams call while AD Damon Evans might want to go after a Grant.
Bottom line, I think Knight would be good immediately for the program. The fact that the famous/infamous Knight has interest in the Georgia job (a job that SHOULD BE one of the top 20 jobs in the country. With the resources the state has and the money the school has...) speaks volumes about how good a job it is. Grant is on the record saying that he would LOVE to come to the SEC, but didn't specify that UGA was at the top of his list. Knight is ASKING (but not officially) for the GEORGIA job. Knight would be good immediately for the program; Grant could be GREAT for the program down the line, but Knight would have a more immediate impact.
So what should the school do? Hire Knight and let him work his mojo (because recruiting to Athens v Lubbuck is a TAD different.) I know Knight's best days are behind him, but his winning #1000 in Athens certainly wouldn't hurt the school's profile. In 4 or 5 years when he decides to hang up his Georgia sweater, the profile will be raised. Maybe Anthony Grant comes in and wins a title 8 years down the line. Maybe he comes in and is a bust. Maybe he comes in, has two seasons of success and bolts for UK or Florida. I want Knight here, a new arena built and then Georgia becomes a destination job and not a stepping-stone job. And if people are so concerned about the future of the program, then hire Knight and his successor and have him be a coach-in-waiting on the bench for 4 or 5 years.

Grant could be the future, but Knight is the present. I know Grant wouldn't be there in 4 years, but the next wunderkind will be. Hire Knight. And watch sweater sales go BOOM!

I would love to see Bobby come to Georgia!! I was in library school at Indiana University during the Glory Days and he also brought in big money for the school and library. I've not really watched basketball much since then and am now a huge football fan, but I'll be there if he comes!! Go, Dawgs!
