Strange that a spinoff becomes an ensemble

Typically when you have a spinoff, usually it centers on one character and all of the episodes/themes are dominated by that person. Frasier from Cheers. Joey from Friends. Lavern and Shirley from Happy Days. The Hills from Laguna Beach.
But now The City has spun off from The Hills, but instead of it being ALL about Whitney, the writers are basing interesting storylines on OTHER characters and leaving out Whitney all together, last night's episode was a prime example.
The show was ALL about Allie (the sunken eyed model) v Whitney's old boss. Whitney was hardly in it, until she stuck her nose in some business that had NOTHING to do with her.

Hate to say it, but Whitney is the 4th best character on her "own show." Erin, Olivia and Jay are all better "characters" than Twitney is. That's why I think the producers were smart to make this more of an ensemble show. Erin is awesome, clearly the hottest chick to ever appear on The Hills/The City in the combined run of the two shows. Jay is WAY cooler than ANY of LC's boys ever were and Brody doesn't count as one of LC's boys since we all knew that relationship was STRICTLY to get Brody famous. And Olivia is pure evil in the way that Heidi only wishes she was....but at the same time, Olivia is also probably the realest character that gives the common sense advice that Twit refuses to take. It must pain Olivia to watch and see how MTV makes her look, when she likely is the sanest person involved with the show.

But I tip my imaginary cap to the producers for not painting themselves into a corner with storylines about ONLY Whitney when there are better characters. This way the show might be watchable in seasons 3 and 4 as characters have grown and we aren't having to bring in random family members that make no sense because LC has rubbed EVERYONE ELSE the wrong way.

I'd like to see more with Erin, more with Jay and more with Olivia. Whitney can be there too, but more of the first three.

And as far as Bromance is concerned, Luke's winning was a foregone conclusion. he won EVERY single competition challenge, possibly earning himself a place in the top "reality competitors of all-time" list. He dominated the way that blond lezbinen dominated Shot at love 2 with Tila. Did Femi REALLY think he stood a chance after they went to JAX and Brody asked repeatedly, "Where is Femi?" Oh, off making out with his EX-girlfried who has cheated on him 74 times apparently. He is "so over her" then literally 8 seconds later says that he is STILL in love with her and always will be in love with her. Whatevs. Femi also couldn't get out of there without comparing Luke to a panther and himself to a wounded lion. huh?

The BEST part though....Femi's sister (or maybe his mom) was named Bunmi! Boon-ME! I remember her from a previous trip to Jacksonville. It was the prom episode of some MTV show that was on at 2am. Bunmi dressed up as some sort of masked woman to spy on her offspring. I just remember laughing my butt off with Roomie, Seano and Wifey and waking up our friend Marc. The rest of that trip (one of the top trips this guy has ever taken FYI) we just kept screaming Boon-ME! That and asking Seano about LOTR and saying how it was a ripoff of The Neverending story....a spinoff perhaps?
