Georgia High School Football weekly update

Last week's high school football action in Georgia was a bit top heavy. With the exception of the Lowndes/Northside Warner Robins, game, NOT a whole lot happened.

But for a second on the L/NWR game, Greg Reid, the CB/RB headed to Florida, from highlights, he looks zonetastic. He looks like he has moves and the Gator moxie that he will need to play for Urban, but let's not kid ourselves. He isn't going to be a running back there. They already have Chris Rainey and Demps and Co. Reid is just the next smallish athlete to go there. He will be a CB and that is all he should be. Sorry Tebow, but Reid ISN'T the answer to your prayer for a legit runningback.
Future UGA-star Abry Jones (NWR) looked good from reading the stats and on the highlights. And as for Eric Fields, dude, QUIT talking smack. I like confidence, but after you were CARTED OFF, maybe you should have stopped jawing with Reid. You are going to Clemson next season. What do you have to talk about?

We spoke with Conrad Nix, coach of NWR on VW's HSH5 last Saturday and he said it was def tougher having the team's stars be on Defense. Last year with Tijuan Green and Marquez Ivory, you could always just say "GO GET ME A TOUCHDOWN!" But with Bacon and Joe Scott in those spots, and Fields and Jones as your "stars" you can't quit say that. Maybe it was only a matter of time before the Eagles lost a game like this.

Otherwise, Camden County proved that they are still 1-0 after laying waste to Beach on Friday. Camden will run the wing-t with Baker and Co. right to the final four where they will likely play a NWR or Newnan and we will see how it works against a quality defense. (Norcross, I said quality. sorry, you guys have slipped. Sorry Coach Richardson)

Grayson looks poised to end Brookwood's 29 game region winning streak at home this week. Pemberton is small, but all heart and Tyler Horne is servicable enough to win this game for the Rams. Speaking of Brookwood though, kudos to Brice Smith for 4 more TDs Friday.

Harrison crushed Cherokee and their game against East Paulding (how are they STILL not ranked?) will decide that region. so if you are counting, Grayson/Brookwood winner and EP/Harr winners in next two weeks will lock up those titles, plus Camden and now Lowndes. The regions are already starting to be sewn up.

Brandon Jacobs of Parkview has been turning it ON of late. he went for 200+ with 3TDs v Central Gwinnett (and Diante Drake-200+ yards) He must be one HECK of a baseball player to think about not playing Rb at the next level.
Oh, and speaking of Gwinnettians at the next level, Tennessee has requested tapes of North Gwinnett QB Michael Tamburo. He reminds me of another lefty from Gwinnett that went to an SEC school, having had some success at the HS level, but no overpowering skills. It seemed to work out OK for David Greene. But UGA isn't giving him a look thanks to Mettenberger and Murray. I hope Tamburo doesn't bite UGA in the butt.

Dalton loses. Stryker Brown is still the best name in HS football though.

Sandy Creek and Rio Johnson beat Whitewater (a sleeper for next season according to my sources.) Just imagine how good Rio and SCHS would be if Braxton Lane was still playing. But Lane is too busy preping to get drafted for MLB. So Donovan Tate (the potential #1 overall) is playing QB for Cartersville and Brandon Jacobs is out there for Parkview, but Lane, a guy that MIGHT go in the 4th or 5th round is sitting out? WHAT?

Paul Mac, co-host of VW's HSH5 on Sports Radio 790 The Zone and Baldwin Brave alum says this might be Baldwin's BEST TEAM EVER. Wow, but with Jerrico Ford and Javonte Edwards out there, they certainly pack a punch. Also, that defense is unreal. They will just slug it out and win every game 24-7 or 17-3. Hey, it works. It's not fancy...

St. Pius and Cole Moon just keep cruising. he had ANOTHER 4 TDs and 195 yards. Mmmm. These guys, having just moved down might be the only ones to challenge Baldwin..and yes I know Cairo has the top spot in AAA. I just don't respect them.

Dunwoody is still my sleeper for AAA though. NO RESPECT FOR ANGELO PEASE and the Syrupmakers OR Blake Sims and Gainesville. Flowery Branch might be scary come playoff time. They remind me of one of those 4 seeds in the NCAA tourney that might knock off a #1 seed in the sweet 16.

I am thinking Henry Co might have a little competition from ONE GUY Rashard Smith of Dublin in being the second best team in AA. Buford moonwalks though to yet another title.

Finally, it was nice in Level-A to see, with Wayshaun Ealy on a bye, that AG Middlebrooks (241/4), Milton McClushkey (142/3), Kawndee Sheffield (203/2) and Antonio Marshall (4 TDs) all try and step up to say "Hey, don't forget about us! We can run too!" Sorry guys, but Lincoln, Brookstone, Miller, and Wilcox don't have a shot at taking down ECI. You guys just don't.

as for this week, I get to see Tucker play(North Springs) and we will have Brookwood/Grayson as well as East Paulding/North Cobb to talk about come Saturday morning. Milton and Toney Williams v Walton and Michael Boydston should make THAT game last about 64 minutes. All the running there! Oh, and Brandon Cross of the Hooche v Tamburo and NoGwin should be entertaining.
Tune in this Saturday www.790thezone.com for VW's High School High Five from 9-10am and Sunday from 1-4 for Score Atlanta's Scoreboard final show.
