Paul Mac's Take on the BCS

Regular Sportsbyfletch contributor Paul Mac Weighs in on the BCS...
The problem is not in the ending so much as it is in the season. The inequity of college schedules. I say again. 1AA schools should NEVER NEVER NEVER be playing any team that has hopes of playing in any bowl game much less a major bowl game. The NFL is great because even the bad competition is still really good. Anyone can win on any given day. The Ap States of the world beating a pathetic Michigan or the Boise States of the world beating an uninterested Oklahoma team are red herrings.

There is plenty of money to be given to the 1AA schools to buy socks for their fencing teams without having to subject college football fans to watching them play good teams. The inherent issue with college football is the lack of ridiculously tough non conference scheduling. Every team should get 6 home and 6 away or split revenues from neutral sites for a game what have you. It’s hilarious hearing fans all over the country debate losses. USC fans saying their loss to Oregon State was somehow better than Penn State’s loss to Iowa (with the best RB in the country no one knew about before this year and he pees all over No heart Moreno) when Penn State smashed Oregon State by 35 pts I believe. The reality is that college kids mail in games they shouldn’t lose and over achieve in games they shouldn’t win. That’s why Texas isn’t playing in the title game this year. That and the Big 12’s rules committee are brain dead. I personally don’t care if Oklahoma scored a billion points on the other teams they beat they still lost to Texas at a neutral site by 10 pts. That was their playoff.

The entire season should be a playoff. GT should be playing Oklahoma State USC vs Alabama in the regular season. If you’re Boise State, you’re going to have to actually stay on the field with Georgia or Florida to earn a spot in a big game.

It would only work if there were a very few bowl games and all the playoffs were played in the home stadiums. Traveling like that in the end of the year would leave a lot of stadiums resembling the ACC championship game. No one wants that.

You should have 7 quality wins to qualify for any bowl game. Teams with 6 wins should get an extra month of practice instead.

If the regular season is quality and these matchups are played early it will be far easier to determine who is deserving and who isn’t even with losses. As it is teams cover their flaws and then lobby like politicians at the end of the year and that’s lame. It’s supposed to be a manly sport. Man up on the scheduling. You want a BCS game? Earn it in the regular season on the field. Big games bring big crowds. No one gives a crap about seeing large team A play crappy horribly mismatched team B. We just like more to see team A get bested by team B on sportscenter. Seriously, no one watched pam ward’s dance party when Ap State beat a bad Michigan team… we just liked the sportscenter clip. Watching that game would be like watching MAC football and the only people that do that are grads of those schools and degenerate gamblers.

While I agree with some of your points, I just want to say that I still love the BCS. It matches #1 v #2. No questions asked.

I do like the idea of 1AA staying the heck away from 1A stadiums and teams playing some one that matters. How about you get ONE non-conference game, reserved for a rival (like UGA v GT) and the other 11 games are against your CONFERENCE OPPONENTS. Last time I checked, if this was put into effect, then every SEC school could play every school.
If you have a conference like the Big East, then you need to grab 4 more teams. Make it 12 teams to a conference. DONE AND DONE.

As for OU being in the title game, true they lost to Texas, but Texas also lost to Texas Tech, who lost to OU. Sorry Paul, but if you just TAKE CARE OF YOUR BIZNAS WITH A RESPECTABLE SKED (that's you Auburn in 2004) IN A RESPECTABLE CONFERENCE (that's you mid-majors) then you will play for a title. Once you lose, you are at the mercy of the system. Texas, you lost out because of numbers and playing a crappier sked than OU did.

And Knownshon may not have heart, but the kid has talent. When he wants to, he's unstoppable. Too bad UGA's defense stinks!
